I hate shopping...so its easy for me to stay out the shops, unless I am grocery shopping.
There have been a number of TV documentarys on "spendaholics" and all the advice given, I make sure that I am doing it!
I dont know that the "experts" are going to be able to help some of those 21 year olds already heavily in debt, but the programmes are definately helping the viewer with subtle visual advice!!!!!
I have also worked in the retail trade, so I know some of the tactics used to get people to spend, but my favorite tips are:
Dont go shopping when you are hungry and you are more likely to spend if you are relaxed!!!!

I'm still studying, my boyfriend just got a job this year.

My boyfriend and I write a list of things to buy for grocery shopping. It really helps to know what you really need, and if we do feel the urge to get something that's not on our list, we make sure that it doesn't exceed a certain amount.

As for personal 'female' shopping, I try to make sure that I can afford them. I usually think about shopping only after I've paid all my bills and necessary expenses, including food and monthly savings. The amount of money I have left will determine how much I can spoil myself with. :)

I hate shopping, and maybe this is why -- the feeling of someone trying to manipulate me. I only go when there's something I need. I also make sure to go with either an exact item in mind, or a set of qualifications for the good.

There are two exceptions, both while grocery shopping. 1)We will usually allow ourselves one or two treats (but we know ahead of time that we'll get some treat, we just don't know what) and 2)Anything that's on a super discount, even if we didn't plan on getting it. Like Chicken at $1/lb. if you buy a 40lb case.

There are two simple rules I follow:

1) That I know what I want to purchase before I go into a store. If possible, thoroughly research this product.

2) Any other item I buy on impulse must be covered for in my discretionary spend budget - otherwise simply don't buy the product.

When I walk into a store, I walk straight to the back to the sales and clearance section. I can get just as excited about those clothes if I make myself go there first. The ones in the very front are usually severely overpriced.
