I too recommend <i>Material World</i>, that was the first thing that really opened my daughters eyes to the excesses we have. I also highly recommend Wendell Berry. He's one of my all time favorites and both his fiction and non-fiction have a lot to say about the general state of the economy and what it means to have enough. That’s great stuff.
