Joshua: If you are paying _any_ APR then you aren’t using them responsibly. Everything I buy is 1-3% cheaper because I use a rewards card and pay it off every month. Do this while being frugal and you can use credit cards responsibly. Not all people can do this, but if you can, then take advantage of the opportunity.

My dad taught me to only use a credit card as a “charge” card, that is, a convenience so that you don’t have to carry cash. Pay it off at the end of the month. Never, ever, use the “credit” feature of the card. I followed his advice, and the only debt I have ever had is my mortgage.

Joshua, I need a working credit card (that’s why I have 2) to pay services over the Internet (mostly magazine subscriptions and hosting fees that would cost me 2 to 5 times more otherwise).

But I also have them setup to pay 100% before interest applies. And I never charge anything on a card that I couldn’t pay immediately.

For some people the temptation will be big enough that not having a credit card is the only choice (I had to cut a couple of vices myself: TV and coffee, so I do understand that). But responsible use of a credit card is possible (just don’t use them for credit). In my case, something it’s even useful to save money.

I hope well-off parents read stuff like that…you don’t do your kid any favors by sheltering them from the real world…unless you plan on outpatient economic support for the rest of your lives.
