[...] Holiday gift ideas that teach kids about money December 5th, 2006 by Lifehacker It's never too early to learn good financial habits, so this holiday season give the little ones some fun money-related gifts. The Get Rich Slowly blog lists a few ideas, including: a Sims 2 expansion pack for the virtual entrepreneur, a Roth IRA in which you match contributions (that could get expensive!), and the Payday board game.
My kids are still a little young but when they gt a little older I'm going to buy a board game called "Look Out Wall Street!" I've heard great things. It especially means a lot to me that John bogle, the father of the index fund endorses it with "A fun game that teaches valuable lessons about investing."

Last year a friend gave us CASHFLOW for Kids™ Board Game, created by Robert Kiyosaki. The cool thing about that game is it encourages one to develop investments and real estate portfolios. The kids we've had play it like the concept that one wins by having more income from passive sources, like dividends and real estate income than one has expenses. The end result assumes making money and having income without "working." It's more conceptual than nuts and bolts like the above mentioned games, but then it fits into the 'passive income' personal finance model that Robert Kiyosaki, Harv Ekert and guys like that espouse.

I was going to suggestion the old computer game Lemonade Stand, but it looks like The Sims 2 may cover it.

I'm no expert, but I think that you cannot deposit into a Roth IRA unless you have earned income. I remember trying to start one around 14 with some birthday money and being rejected because I didn't have a job

You also are not allowed to deposit more money than you earn. So if you are matching a kid's deposits, you might exceed the limit.

Just something to check on before going that route.

My dad showed me how great compound interest was when I was growing up by looking at the numbers. If I deposited a few hundred or thousand dollars when I was 18, how quickly I could become a millionaire with no extra effort. Gotta hook em while they're young.

The ROTH and the 529 are my favorites...we are signed up with UPromise, which puts a nickel or dime here or there into a 529 for our kids...which we dont even have yet. If you havent checked it out, its pretty cool.
