Amberlynn wrote to share this gem, which has been making the rounds of the internet. What happens when a big corporation can’t tell dollars from cents? This reminds me of fast food places that post prices of .99 cents for their burgers. Think they’ll really sell you a sandwich for a penny?

This is a dirt-cheap way to create healthy customized oatmeal. I’m on a low-sugar diet, for example, and could use this technique to create tasty, low-sugar breakfasts.

I listened to that verizon call a couple days ago. I actually sat and heard the whole 23 minute clip laughing very uncomfortably. He would lead these people through the calculations and be so close without getting them to drive it home. I think he should have illustrated the units by replacing “cents” with “eggs” or “bottle caps”. But I just couldn’t believe the responses he was getting from all these different people! “Sir, that’s just your opinion”. and “I’ve been working here for two years, one and a half of those as manager”. And then all the long pauses while these fools worked their calculators and scratched their heads… Every time, they came out with a final answer in dollars sounding 100% confident.
One of my biggest disappointments about going to college was having to sit through too many classes that had people churning these things you really should know from previous schooling. It was like more high school all over again, only terribly expensive - no!!!

So, if you see a sign at a fast food place claiming items on their value menu cost .99 cents, aren’t they legally obligated to sell it to you at the advertised price?

Coincidentally, I just wrote one of my grammar-nazi posts about this very error, because, somewhat terrifyingly, personal finance bloggers do it too.
