Installing a new hot water heater may save you money but if you really want to save on both money and natural gas you should install a tankless heater. I did one myself (write up here: http://www.knick-knack.com/howto/house/tankless-hot-water-heater.html ) and my utility bill went down 35% on average. And no need to worry about “lugging it upstairs”, it was light enough my girlfriend was able to sling it around without help…
