People are saying, "How could this make money back then?" or "Why is the arthor saying this or that is glamorous or cool?"

You have to remember, this is before widespread plastic, television, jet airplanes, the Beatles, Johnny Cash, synthetic fabrics, etc.

Look at it from that perspective and you'll understand why a celophane dress would have been really neat, why people would build an electro plater by hand (the one in the diagram is obviously hand-made), and so on.

It surprises me how little people know of the way life was just 80 years ago. Talk to your grandparents folks, they'll tell you all about it. Talk to them now before they pass away.

I love these kinds of old books and I'm jealous of your purchase. I don't necessarily think the book is as it seems. I think the only money making going on was by the author who may have made something out of the few copies that actually sold to some poor disillusioned souls!

"The hammer and how to use it." Brilliant! I'm off to build something!

I find the charm of this book both fascinating and just a bit...depressing, which has nothing to do with the Great Depression. I wonder how much of this was directed towards people who already had the hobby listed, or if the book was encouraging people to pick up particular hobbies. I mean, how many people had a printing press hanging around, or something to bind the printed recipes into a book to make it "look interesting"? How many people had an electroplater, a ventriloquist's dummy, or a harp?

I bet if you played the harp wearing a cellophane dress, you'd make millions.

Oh, the humanity!

I love the idea. Most of my friends tease me because almost all of my hobbies earn me money. I started taking dance classes for fun two years ago--now I perform for cash (well, it's not exactly revenue-generating, but it pays for classes and costumes). I mystery shop, since I'm interested in consumer marketing and behavior. I read, and now I work at a publishing house.

I figure if I'm going to be spending huge chunks of time doing something, it might as well be self-supporting!

What a great book! An interesting peek at the lives and attitudes of people in the Depression Era. Nowadays, instead of being encouraged to pick up fun, potentially money-making hobbies, we see infomercials convincing us to get involved in RE flipping and pyramid schemes. Although some of the "hobbies" seem a little bizarre (would someone really buy and wear the cellophane ball-gown?? And calling the accordian "glamourous" is a bit of a stretch...) at least the author is encouraging people to find things they can get some pleasure out of, rather than polishing apples or selling pencils!

I read Manon Lescaut for a French lit class in college. Critics have noted that while the narrator repeatedly remarks on how beautiful Mlle. Lescaut IS, her features are never described. This allows each reader to imagine her as his or her personal ideal of beauty.

So my guess would be that a Manon Lescaut doll might be a form on which someone could paint a face, hair, etc. to his or her liking.

It is, however, just a guess.

I think that this book is fascinating. However, I'm not sure about some of these methods. I guess it shows its age. Today, wouldn't comic book collecting be added to an update of this book? All thing considered, it's a slow earner, but a fun one none the less.

I love old books like that. Some of the things look more like crafts than hobbies that pay, but there are actually a few there that still would pay. It's also interesting to think of people having printing presses laying around the house to work with in their spare time.

Great stuff, I love books like that. I grew up reading "The Boy Mechanic" and "The Young Craftsman," which were written in the 1940s and 50s, and they had much the same tone.

It's funny, I've always had "hobbies that pay," although I've learned that focusing on the "pay" part makes them seem too much like work. When I was a kid I was into woodcarving and sold my carvings at a local craft shop. It was my first experience of being paid for something I loved to do. I was also into nature writing and sold a few articles to magazines (writing eventually became my vocation). Music is my paying hobby now -- I've been playing traditional Irish music for 30 years and bring in a surprising amount of money each year through gigs and teaching. As I commented here before, I use my income from music to pay for my music expenses, mainly instruments and CDs, but also music-related travel (such as going to festivals in the US and Ireland). That way I can keep my hobby self-sustaining. Some years I spend more than I earn, but other years I earn more than I spend so it roughly balances out.
