Get Rich Slowly at MyBlogLog Print
Sunday, 11th March 2007 (by J.D.)This article is about Administration
I don’t really know much about the service, but I thought I should mention that there is a Get Rich Slowly community at MyBlogLog. Please feel free to join, if that appeals to you.
Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of adding the MyBlogLog widget to the sidebar? I’m not keen on adding more clutter there, but if it’s something you folks would like, I’ll consider it. Here’s an example of what it might look like:

RSS Feeds
Facebook
Twitter

JD:
My personal opinion is that I don’t like that widget - I think its kinda gimmicky and doesn’t really do much to add meat to the site.
Just my 2 cents…;)
Thanks.

Rob, that’s basically my feeling, too, but I don’t know if other people find it useful. It adds nothing to my enjoyment of other web sites. Maybe, though, I just don’t know what I’m doing…

Another 0.02: From this reader’s POV I think you should skip it. It seems more of a tool for the blog owner? I’ve seen this widget on several sites and never clicked on any of the outgoing links. If you want to add more to the sidebar I’d welcome a blogroll instead.

While there is an admin post up, I’m curious about the mortgages in Ireland & properties in Bulgaria ads (investing in Europe is big in Celtic Tiger Ireland) … I’m an Irish expat, so I’ve actually clicked thru and read the info but these are oddly Irish-centric ads to have on a US site. Where’d they come from?!

Those are TextLinkAds. I agree they do seem kind of odd. They’ve been up a long time now, too, so the advertisers must be satisfied. It’s strange the sort of ads that come through via TLA and Google. As I’ve mentioned in the past, I try to screen out blatantly inappropriate material. (No “payday loans” ads, for example.)

Shoemoney — http://www.shoemoney.com/ — has highlighted some fairly serious issues with MyBlogLog. The security holes (at least those currently identified) have probably been fixed now but there are other issues with regards click tracking, including adsense click tracking, that I’m not sure have yet been fixed.
I think when it was initially set up it was fairly badly implemented. If you do want to give MyBlogLog a try I’d wait a bit for Yahoo to straighten MyBlogLog’s affairs out.

Somewhere I saw a smaller version of the MyBlogLog widget that was far less obtrusive and thus, perhaps less gimmicky, but I can’t find the code for it. (It resembled one of those flickr badges with just a grid of tiny photos & no names.) If I were to add a MBL widget to my site, I’d look for that one and skip the bigger one.
I do like seeing my cat icon on other websites and every once in a while I’ve clicked through to view another member — and I’ve had visitors to my own MBL community that have arrived through clicks on my icon. So, it may be that you’ll benefit just as well by visiting other sites who use the widget and leaving your imprint there.
On an entirely unrelated note: We have received the pickled items! (And there was much rejoicing.)

I was also going to mention the issues Shoemoney highlighted on his blog.
I personally wouldn’t participate in such a thing.

I’d like to add two points:
1. I believe the widget only shows other Bloglog members who have viewed your Bloglog profile, not your blog so I don’t see what relevance it would be.
2. These days I guess most regular readers use a feed like Bloglines to keep up to date with their blogs so don’t usually visit your actual blog to see what’s on the sidebar. One of the reasons I’ve left my template pretty simple since I was forced to switch to New Blogger.

I like it on my own blog. I think it depends on the website.

I’m not a big fan. If I want to know more about the commenter, I’ll click the link to their name and go to their site. I don’t care what silly icon they have loaded for an avatar.

Everyday I click on the people who have come to my blog since yesterday, I see who they are, what they have and add them as friends. You can see my blog log on my sidebar, I use small images, and no names.

Yeah, I agree that something along the lines of a blogroll would be a lot more useful than that widget. I’ve joined MyBlogLog, but haven’t installed any tracking code on my site, nor have installed the widget.
