yes, more money brings more happiness. a little extra money brings a little extra happiness and a lot of extra money brings more than a little extra happiness. i’m sick of those idiotic studies showing that money doesn’t bring happiness – talk about flawed studies! if i had $25 extra dollars i would think, “nifty – gas for the week”. if i had $100 million extra dollars i would think, “nifty, no more work for the rest of my life or worrying about which darned investment to partake of”.

I agree with creamcitian. Money brings more happiness to most people, since the majority of us live in the ‘middle class’ range and are not likely to become uber-rich any time soon. The ones preaching that the rich aren’t any happier than the middle class forget that the middle class still has to WORRY about money, on more than one occasion. I’m slowly climbing out of debt, and it would make me happy to never had to worry about making it from paycheck to paycheck again.

J.D. – thanks again for bringing attention to this important topic. It is interesting to read yet another article that refers to the same studies and same researchers/experts. This stuff is pretty well-known by now. I guess it takes constant reiteration to get these points across.
What fascinates me most is that people tend to ignore these simple facts/truths. I suppose people feel that they need to experience being rich for themselves before they truly believe that money will not bring them happiness. The problem with that scenario is that they will, in all likelihood, not be rich. Therefore, they will have wasted their lives chasing after money that will not buy them happiness, while at the same time, ignoring those simple and accessible things that will make them feel the happiest. A sad but strange paradox indeed.

I don’t think money itself brings happiness, in that money itself really isn’t (shouldn’t be??) the “goal”. The goal is all the intangible things that make life worth living.
Some people — regardless of wealth level — tend to equate “what makes life worth living” with things that money can buy. So to the extent this is true for you, you’ll tend to equate more money=greater happiness.
The reality I think is more subtle (and more than a little cliched) — that money helps make the true experiences of life that bring happiness come more easily, and perhaps more frequently. So money really SUPPORTS happiness. Happiness can easily be found without money, but it can also be greatly aided by money.
That doesn’t take away from the fact that money is a fundamental need if one is to have any measure of comfort in life. Personally I do prefer regular meals and a soft bed to dumpster diving and a gutter. That’s real happiness that only money can bring.
