It's all about starting early. The earlier you can invest, the quicker the path to financial freedom. I'm glad I've seen the light at age 24, so that I can begin planning for my future.

I find it pretty shocking that in the UK (where I'm from), financial literacy is almost ignored in most schools. Ridiculous!

It's nice that children were given the opportunity to learn even just the basics about finance. This foundation can help develop their ability to be wise in spending money.

I agree with limeade that financial literacy should start at home.

What? Wait until they're in college and responsible for thousands (if not more) of dollars in debt, in their/their parents name(s)?

I'd say Junior Year - time to save, no panic about college, and give you time to take it in before you sign up for a loan and flunk out.

I think your local Extension service is a great resource for financial literacy materials in many cases. Florida has a really extensive set of materials. http://solutionsforyourlife.ufl.edu/families_and_consumers/money_matters/index.html

I think it's great that there's some movement towards teaching finances in school. It's been quite a long time coming.

I will say that it is taught at certain schools, but it's not mandatory so you have to have an interest in it to take the class.

Most importantly though, I think the basics at least should be taught at home. No better place to learn.
