What we don't know is what taxes will be 10, 15, 25 years from now. Sure, maybe we will get a tax break at age 65, but who's to say they won't eliminate that break before then? Or change it to 70 or 72? How do we know tax rates won't increase by then. And of course, most people feel Social Security will be next to the Edsel at the Smithsonian.

There are many enemies to our investing and retirement planning, and no one knows for sure what awaits me 20-30 years from now. All I can do is invest the smartest way I can (at the highest return possible), then adjust to less risky investments as I approach that golden age.

There is a fourth enemy also...YOU! An entire field of study called, "behavioral finance," has emerged based on the unintentional financial sabotage people inflict on themselves. There have been a number of academic studies that conclude most investors do worse than their investments even after accounting for taxes, fees, and inflation. People often make financial mistakes out of emotion because we're, well, human.
