[...] In other news, David sent me an article about the subjectivity of wine. Turns out there isn’t any universal agreement on what makes a quality wine — it’s a matter of opinion. What’s more, taste is greatly influenced by other inputs, such as the shape of the bottle and the color of the wine. Surprised? I’m not. This sounds exactly like the marketing studies that Malcolm Gladwell explored in Blink. [...]

I really liked this post. Great that you got permission to excerpt Gladwell.

It also applies to Vodka. Here's a little story I wrote about it.

I believe that the effect is only temporary. In the end people buy products that taste good. Most of the foods described here are junk and that's why the packaging starts to matter. And margarine shouldn't even be classified as a food, its a chemical product, yuk!

That's why I have a job. Hooray for graphic design, marketing design, advertising design...etc. Actually I think it's totally crap when companies want to lie to customers, but I do enjoy making products and packaging look as good as possible.

Good article! It would be interesting to see how this relates to people and the relationships between us... are we fixed on the package (looks, etc.) instead of the content (personality, etc.) here too? If so can we minimize the effect of this by keeping away from the mainstream culture that feeds us the idea of glamourous looks? Just a thought...

I started buying the peaches in the clear container because they had a screw-top lid. I didn't have to get out a can opener, fish for a clean container, dump them in and put the lid on again and I didn't have to clean a container when it was empty. However, I only buy the peaches when they're on sale, because I am not willing to pay more for this convenience. LOL.

I even got my sociology teacher to read the tipping point.

Marketers are well-paid because they are smart people who get the desired results. Our only defense is to be every bit as smart and focused on results.

When we blink, they win.

While I agree that subliminal marketing is insidious, I don't necessarily agree that it is "pulling the wool over a customers' eyes" to charge more for a round package than a square one for ice cream. From a rational cost perspective, the round container (and packaging process) may in fact cost more to manufacture. Nonetheles, I think the burden lies with the consumer to notice the price difference and make appropriate shopping decisions. Misleading product labeling should be avoided, but requiring shoppers to do a simple comparison is legitimate, I think.

In Japan, where I live, a single-serving container of HaagenDaz ice cream (about one scoop) retails for about $2.00-$2.50 US. It's expensive, so is reserved for a rare treat. After a decade here however, I'm beginning to wonder if the whole American concept of "selling more for less" is a good one at all. Maybe smaller packages and more expensive products would help cut obesity in the US, which in itself a very costly health problem.

I hate the idea of being manipulated, but I definitely think we are all affected by it in one way or another.

It's really amazing to me how much things like this affect our decision making. To me they work because they appeal to a story that we associate ourselves with. On my blog I go through an exercise to try and identify what those stories are. I figure that if I at least know what kinds of things I am likely to respond to, I will be more able to recognize when those things are being manipulated.

This reminds me of the last time Cherry Coke changed it's label. I don't like Cherry Coke, and I haven't for years, but their new label was so enticing I just had to try it again. Maybe they had changed to beverage too, I thought. It still tasted bad. I try not to let the packages fool me anymore.

Actually, here in Quebec our margarine is still white because of a law meant to protect the dairy industry. I still buy margarine (and butter for some purposes). It would be interesting to see whether people in Quebec consume less margarine than people in provinces/states with yellow margarine.

I have seen this phenomenon manifested in other ways as well. Groups who are shown the same TV picture, once with a great surround sound system and one without will rate the TV picture with surround better than the picture on the other TV, even though the picture is identical.

Nice timing on this essay, as the headline abut kids preferring food in McDonald's wrappers. I've been aware of this tendency for some time as I hated powdered milk as a child so my mom would fool us by mixing the powdered milk and putting into a milk carton before serving it.

Back in the 60's as a food major I had an advertising class that taught us how to make food look better. For instance: in making a sandwich, put more filling in the middle, less on the edges - instead of spreading evenly on the bread - people think they are getting more filling. Serve soup, like vegetable, in a shallow bowl, pieces stick up out of the middle, people think more solids than liquid. Made me very much aware of that end of advertising.

Since this book goes into the color, shape of packaging, etc. I'll definately read it. I think it should be required reading for every high school student! More knowledge, more power.

Of course, I also think personal finance should be required by every high schooler too.
