Leo, the genius behind Zen Habits (one of my favorite productivity sites), has helped to launch Blog Action Day, an annual event designed to focus attention on a single important issue. From the official press release:
An international initiative of bloggers known as “Blog Action Day” launched today, with the aim of uniting thousands of blogging voices, talking about one issue for one day. This year on Blog Action Day, which is slated for Oct. 15, 2007, bloggers will be discussing the environment. Major blogs have signed up to participate, including Lifehacker, Dumb Little Man, Lifehack.org, Get Rich Slowly, Web Worker Daily, GigaOm, The Simple Dollar, Zen Habits, Freelance Switch, LifeClever, Unclutterer, Pronet Advertising, Wise Bread and many more.
“For just one day, we’d like to unite as many of the millions of bloggers around the world and speak about one issue — the environment,” said Collis Ta’eed, an Australian blogger from FreelanceSwitch.com, and a cofounder of Blog Action Day. “We want to display the potential and the power of the blogging community, which is a disparate community but one with an amazing size, breadth and diversity. By bringing everyone together for one day, we can see just how much can be achieved, and how much we can be heard.”
I don’t often write about the environmental implications of our personal finance choices, but you can bet I will on October 15th! If you’d like to participate, head over to the Blog Action Day web site to register.

I saw this on Zen Habits the other day. I’m just a guy who writes mystery novels, but I’ve signed up and will be participating in my little corner of the blogging world.
Love this idea.

I just signed up yesterday! I’ve made a number of environmentally conscious changes around the house lately and they’ve almost all had a positive effect on our finances. I’m sure I’ll be blogging about it before October, but I’ll save a big, link-happy post for the official day.

It’s not particularly clear from the Blog Action Day website that the emphasis is on Global Warming/Climate Change (GW). Their faq page says: “undeniable urgency that issues like global warming and pollution [...]”
The environment is an umbrella issue and can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. I hope the focus on GW is stressed more clearly. I also hope this doesn’t get polarized into another Red vs Blue debate, as participation from both sides is necessary to get anywhere on this.

I’ve decided I will write a post about how major companies (like google) are now building their computers and networks in an environmentally conscious manner. And how every day users can make their computers more efficient.

I think I will interview my dad who is an environmental economist who works for The Environmental Defense Agency. Hmmmm I better get cracking.

I write about the environment and money every day, but it will be fun to have that focus on Oct. 15!

I agree with the poster who said no red or blue state crap. We are all in it together and the sooner we grow up the faster we will really approach a world where we have actually saved our planet. I can’t wait, to quote Art Hoppe.

Blog Action Day…
Via Get Rich Slowly : This is a very interesting idea - a number of high profile blogs are dedicating a day (October 15th) to writing on a single topic : the environment. Naturally there are many, many issues……
