An old fridge can also be useful to someone who welds. By adding a light bulb inside it, you can create a crude "rod oven" to store welding rods. The fridge insulation and the light bulb create a hot environment, which helps prevent the electrodes from absorbing water from the air. It's debatable how well it works, but a lot of people swear by it.

The end of college season is a great time to find stuff. I can't count how many times I've walked by the trash with good college books laying there. I've made a few bucks just selling those on half.com and ebay.

Well, i just did this yeasterday! We found so many Futons, in various states of repair, that i no longer wonder how those specialty stores stay in buisness!

Found 3 sets of luagage (the kids used it to get here, how did they get back?); 3 pairs of REALLY expensive (and hideous) jeans; chair, lampset, one of those expensive full-spectrum lamps, ties (yes, ties. wtf), SO MANY POWERSTRIPS, a wii-mote, and a number of school books. (plus a few items i can't remember)

Going to sell the school books back to the bookstore, sell a couple of the lamps on craigslist, and donate most of the rest to the GoodWill!

Our local university got savvy and no longer has the big waste that the article speaks of. They now have everything go to local charity (5 or 6 local churches and their programs). They call it 10 tons of Love and this year was more like 20 tons! My church is the main "sorting area"- refugees and some other locals get furniture, our church's free clothing giveaway program gets filled up, housewares, etc get redistributed. It took 40 people everyday for 2 weeks to get thru it all! And now this week it is being given out.

This is not to say all the unwanted stuff makes it way over though-- I am a springtime garbage picker and proud of it. We hold our findings in the garage and sell it in a big sale in late summer-- when the kids come back to college. Our biggest year netted $2000!

My neighbor got an amazing TV from the dumpster in our apartment complex. One of the students moving out just left his 27" TV sitting next to it. I also have a big carpet that someone left next to the dumpster. Lots of people were tossing out clothes, books, mops, etc etc. It's really horrible to see all the waste, and it's definitely worse at the off-campus places. Colleges are getting smarter and calling in charity trucks, but off campus places host plenty of lazy folk who just throw things away.

I'm going to be moving right about the time new students are moving in. I'm hoping some of them will buy all my stuff, as I'm planning to just move in my car. So, students, remember to check out Craigslist and all that jazz upon move in to save on the stuff you'll just throw out later!

This is also INCREDIBLY true when men are deploying overseas in large groups. You will find several household items, furniture, electronics, and other items in good or even excellent condition being sold for next to nothing. Usually it's because these guys don't want to pay a monthly fee to store stuff they aren't using (understandable). Of course, it helps to live in a military town like I do.

I'd like to second Lissa (#16)'s post. Bedbugs have become a huge problem in New York, Washington D.C., Vancouver, Seattle, Boston, San Francisco, etc. - lots of cities with large, young populations. They ride in on about anything, don't discriminate between clean and dirty, and are near-impossible to get rid of. I've never had them (KNOCK ON WOOD), but have heard terrible stories. Please be careful about what you take in from off the street.

I took advantage of this a few times, especially when I still lived near my alma mater's campus (as in, down the block).

I also found that late August was a great time for ME to have a yard sale of student-friendly items; the kids just coming back for the fall need new stuff. I was able to get rid of my old bike, mini-fridge, and other small appliances, and ended up with some money in my pocket, too.

Colleges are great sources of cheap/free entertainment as well. I live a 15 minute walk from a campus with tons of free movies, lectures, seminars and plays. I go to the art gallery openings featuring good food and free beer and even naked ladies walking around (it was part of the exhibit -- go figure). I also go to lots of events at a nearby Ivy League school, where surprisingly most events are open to the public (and free).

I've seen movies before they go to the theater with the director there to speak and they even served us pizza. I'm staying here when I retire because I can get most of the benefits of being a student without paying the tuition. The internet has made it so easy to find out about all this activity without being an insider.

In Clemson, SC, early May is that special time of year. Students throw out all sorts of good stuff and enterprising locals cruise the Clemson area with vans and pickup trucks to get the free stuff.

Most of the stuff I wouldn't want to bring in my house (bedbugs), but there were some good finds. One time I got a full bag of cleaning supplies that had barely been used. Apparently the students had bought the supplies new, cleaned up their room before they moved out, then tossed them. Saved us a good bit of money.

Local students are also a great source of services. We never would have been able to afford a string quartet at our wedding if they hadn't been students. They were completely professional and (rightly) very proud of their performance.

It's so true - I've contributed when I lived on campus, and benefited just as much.

My best find:
An entire kitchen set - dishes, pots, pans, silverware, glasses, utensils - for $20. A young engaged Jewish couple was moving to New York and their stuff wasn't 'kosher' for their in-laws.

Funny semi-related true story:

Kris and I have a small fridge that lives in our mudroom. It died several weeks ago. The motor stopped running and it just gave up the ghost. For the past six weeks, we've just kept it in the mudroom, waiting to get rid of it.

Today was the first day of our street's annual garage sale. At 4pm, I carried the fridge to the curb. I drew up some signs that said "free fridge" and then wrote out another page that explained the thing didn't work.

I was taping the first of these signs to the fridge when a guy drove by in a truck. He stopped and backed up. "You giving that away?" he asked.

"I am," I said. "But it doesn't work."

He turned off the engine and stepped out of the truck. He tipped over the fridge and looked at it. "Hm," he said. "I want it anyhow." He loaded it into the truck bed and drove off.

Hilarious.

I would urge everyone to be EXTREMELY careful about any 2nd hand mattresses or couches/chairs. I'm a nurse and we are seeing near-epidemic records of bed bugs. Bed bugs (google them) are very difficult to get rid of and HUGELY expensive....several thousand dollars.

You can also buy cars this way. Rich students from overseas enroll at the university, buy cars, don't drive them much (since they spend nine months a year in one town), and sell them after four years, when they go back home. Our campus noticeboards always have good deals on cars at the end of the academic year.

Around here there is an organized event called "Dump and Run" http://www.dumpandrun.org/dump.htm
Where students leave their stuff and it is sold to benefit a charity.

Another money saving idea is Freecycle. Many towns have a Freecycle email list where people post things they want to get rid of for free.

On a similar note, if you want to sell something put up ads on the university notice board (if you live close to one)...The new comers are usually looking for something and you will get a quick sale..

You know, I think this post and the comments are a perfect example of what not to do as a college student!

If there's any less-than-wise college students reading this blog (and I imagine there's some :-)), gain some wisdom from this post: Stop buying brand new stuff at retail prices and then just toss it out at the end of the school year!

Developing a frugal and spartan living habit in college will start you on a lifestyle that will ultimately save you millions over your life.

All that money you're saving each month not buying crap you don't need or won't use could be invested in good growth stock mutual funds. From age 18 to age 68, even $100/month (and many spend that on cable and cell phones, at least) will grow to, quite literally, millions.

Of course, the power of compound interest working *for* you isn't taught very well in school. If it were, 19% of the bankruptcies filed in the USA wouldn't be college aged people and the average college student wouldn't be graduating with a car loan, a student loan and a heap of credit cards.

@Toes: i agree, most of the college students around here don't have TIME to put it up on craigslist.

Around here (Madison, WI), we have what is called, "Hippie Christmass"; which is when all the stuff that the students/other renters can't move get put onto the curb, and it's free for the taking. You just go around, taking the stuff, from dumpsters, or from the curb. Mid-august is the most, since around 85% of the places stop renting on the 14th of august, and the 15th they start up. (i have no idea where ppl stay that night. I had a place with a two week gap, and lived in my friend's backyard for those two weeks.) Since i now have most of what i need, i take the stuff that's in good shape over to the Good Will (and get a recipt. :D), while we also keep an eye out for things our friends need. My buddy brows his dad's trailer, and we use his Jeep. :D

At the middle of may is what _I_ call Hippie St. Nick's day, and that's when the college dorm stuff is available. It's often cheaper for them to buy something new again next year, then to store it, or to ship it back home, and then back again!
