Beware of WiiConnect24!! If you see a yellow light on your Wii when it's off, then its in standby mode which could be a very bad thing. The Wii will run hot but the fan will not be running. When off, your Wii should always have a red light.

I had a similar problem, Wii would not read disks, made a crunchy sound. Fortunately, Nintendo has a "recall" of sorts for Super Smash Brothers Brawl. I sent it back under this recall and got my Wii back good as new, no cost. Might just be worth picking up SSBB if I didn't have it already.

Happy Wiiing

Okay, IE test...

This one I am able to edit. The FireFox one, no go.

Kinda sad that the comment edit plugin doesn't support the browser that over a third of my site's readers use.

Just got back from the Nintendo Customer Center in Redmond. Walked in at 11:15 AM with my broken-fan Wii, walked out at 11:45 with a fully-functioning replacement with all my save files and Miis copied over, and a restarted 1-year warranty.

While we waited I gawked at the display case with Nintendo products dating back to the playing card days, and played a bit of Mario Kart.

Oh, and they gave me new Wii-mote straps just because I asked.

I would have spent some time brushing up on how to repair the Wii myself (ie. purchasing a new drive and replacing it myself) rather than paying for repair. My May 2006 Xbox 360 died when Halo 3 came out, and I repaired it for about $5 with some screws, nuts, and washers from Lowes. Its been alive and kicking just fine ever since. (And no, I don't run out and buy every game as the industry hypes it for launch day. Halo 3 and GTA IV are the last two games I have purchased.)

This happened to our playstation 2. It didn't really phase my husband cause he just went out and bought the ps3. Now, I plan on vacuuming it every so often, just to get the dust out of it. Thanks for all the budgeting and finance info. You are helping me to convince my husband that having money and buying things will not make him happy (at least not in the long run). Anyway, keep up the posts.

the concept of wii death strikes fear into my heart. i don't have time to use it often, but when i do it's likely because i can't find another way to unwind.

Funny, my Wii has been acting up lately too. It didn't totally die, but has occasionally been refusing to read discs, giving a variety of errors. I realized that I was probably in my last month of warranty, so I called up Nintendo. They gave me a repair number, and I'll be dropping by the repair center in Redmond next week. Should be in and out in just a few hours.

Living in Seattle does have some advantages :^)
