This is a reminder that I will be scarce this week.
I will be working to manage my mother’s affairs while she’s in the hospital. There’s an overwhelming amount that needs to be done, both for her immediate needs, and for her needs when she’s finally discharged. (And we still don’t know when that will be.)
In the meantime, I’ll be sharing guest posts from other personal finance bloggers and from Get Rich Slowly readers. I encourage you to give them a warm welcome, and to join the conversation.
I hope to be back full-time on Monday the eleventh. (I’ll try to participate in the discussions this week, and may get a chance to make a few brief entries.)

Hi! This is my first visit to your site (I found you on RealSimple.com) and I just wanted to tell you how much I’m enjoying it. Thank you for taking the time to publish so many thoughtful articles.
I’m sorry to hear your mom is in the hospital and hope she feels better soon. I’m sure we’re all sending positive, healing thoughts her way - I know I am!

Please remember to take care of yourself while looking after your mother’s affairs. As you are no doubt learning, there is nothing rational about our oxymoronic “health care system” when things go badly for seniors. The work load IS overwhelming, so don’t feel like you have to toil endlessly at home repairs, taxes, discharge planning, tracking down the elusive doctors, etc. Just make a cup of tea, sit down, and breath periodically.

God Bless during this difficult time

It sounds like you should really consult and elder law lawyer. You could get a really great long term care plan in place for your mother and sort through her finances that way. They also can help to qualify her for Medicaid. I think this is especially important as you are unsure of her finances.

I hope all goes well for you and your Mom…she’s very fortunate to have a son who’s willing to do what needs to be done when she isn’t able to do it herself.

I’ll say a prayer for your mother and your family during this difficult time.

hang in there. it’s never easy to handle situations like these. my mom was sick off and on through the years and it took its toll on the family. take care of your personal business and take all the time you need. that comes first.

Just found your website after I heard you on NPR yesterday, and I already love it. Good luck to you and your Mom, keep your chin up!

I wish the best possible for your mom and your family. We have been going through a similar situation since my mom had surgery 19 months ago. It took us quite a while to “find” all of her resources and get them organized and we now handle all finances, medical decisions, care decisions(Mom has full time care at home). As others have said, also take care of yourselves and your families. The internet - on-line banking, email with drs, financial people, homecare company, medical supplies- has been a real blessing as we do not live in the same city as my mom.
