We have been going through a similar situation since my mom had surgery 19 months ago. It took us quite a while to "find" all of her resources and get them organized and we now handle all finances, medical decisions, care decisions(Mom has full time care at home). As others have said, also take care of yourselves and your families. The internet - on-line banking, email with drs, financial people, homecare company, medical supplies- has been a real blessing as we do not live in the same city as my mom. You could get a really great long term care plan in place for your mother and sort through her finances that way. They also can help to qualify her for Medicaid. As you are no doubt learning, there is nothing rational about our oxymoronic "health care system" when things go badly for seniors. The work load IS overwhelming, so don't feel like you have to toil endlessly at home repairs, taxes, discharge planning, tracking down the elusive doctors, etc. Just make a cup of tea, sit down, and breath periodically.
