Quite some time back I purchased a pair of shoes for my daughter at Target. She tried them on in our family room and paraded around the room in them (she was 7) while I tried to determine if they fit or not. They did not so I attempted to return them to Target. When the employee found a minute pebble stuck in a crease in the sole, I was told that they did not take back shoes that had been worn. These still had big tags on them! Unbelievable! I never again purchased something that had to be tried on at home. Their return policies stink.

I agree with everyone above who says they no longer shop at Target. We received a baby monitor through target.com that we didn't want and they would not allow us to return the unopened box with the shipping materials. I wrote several letters to them that went unaswered and just decided to never shop there again.

I just don't even like to support Target at all. I prefer to get onto eBay or Amazon and give money to someone just like me who's trying to sell a DVD they don't want so that they can have a couple extra bucks. I'd say that's the way to go from now on.

Good story though, thanks.

I had the exact same experience, only at a Wal-mart. I had never heard of this before. Not taking back a defective DVD because of copyright issues? They sold me a DEFECTIVE product. I was nice, I asked for the manager, I stayed nice, I got tough, then snide, all to no avail.

To all of you telling us not to buy DVDs because we can get them from the library: Uh, some of us can't. My county library does not carry DVDs of any kind. I couldn't believe it at first but -- nothing. Not even educational DVDs!

I'm a bit sick of comments like this: some people WANT to OWN some movies, deal with it and mind your business.

And what about the patronising bit about books? Watching movies doesn't make you an illiterate who doesn't read books, you know.

Really, people still buy dvds? Try the library folks, the movies are *free* and you get them for a week (at least here in Oregon) You can even pick up a book while you are there!

This may be naive of me, and you've obviously as much time and blood pressure as you're going to on this product, but what about going to the manufacturer? I had a similar experience with a food product, and the manufacturer's rep was so appalled with how their product was represented (moldy right out of the box!) they sent me a coupon for several free products--- and gained a loyal customer out of a mistake that was patently not their fault.

I bought a rug on clearance at Target for $49. When I unrolled it, it had huge dirt/oil stains on it, at least 5 places on the front of the rug.

When I returned it to Target a few days later (of course, it was the ONE receipt that I couldn't find), they said that it wasn't even their rug and they had no record of ever selling that rug. It even had the UPC sticker till on it!!

They would not give me a refund or store credit. I even called the main Target district office with no success. Targets customer service has greatly deteriorated over the years but apparently people are not sick enough of it yet since they keep growing.

And you probably wasted over 5.50 in gas to get over there. There are points where people should take losses and leave instead of making it into a big deal. Let the buyer beware!

I am so mad at Target. They have the worst customer service and "go to hell" attitude. I recently sent a letter to their corporate offices about a particularly bad episode and the reply I got was basically, "we're sorry you feel this way, ciao!" I no longer shop there and everytime I give them another chance I am disappointed again.

What is it about Target? I've stopped shopping there because I've gotten multiple purchases home just to find they were defective.

Agree with other posters, too. Not having to deal with returns is one more good reason not to buy STUFF.

What Carol said.

It is not clear from what Target posts online if that policy has changed

Unless they've changed the policy that store credit can only be used for items in the same department as the returned item, it isn't worth shopping at Target.

I won't shop at Target after trying to return a gift without a receipt. I received a few too many bathrobes one Christmas and wanted to exchange it for store credit to get some housewares or costume jewelery. Nope - had to shop in the same department that the return was coming from! The last thing I needed was another piece of lingerie or another bathrobe! I wasn't pleased...and because of that lousy return policy, I will never shop at Target.

Target's company-wide return policy has recently changed, by the way.

Gift Registrants (baby and wedding) can now print a Gift Purchase Log which shows every purchase that was made from the registry. This can be used in lieu of a gift receipt, but granted, that still hinges on the gift buyer actually presenting the registry to the cashier to get it updated.

Also, the new limit on No Receipt Returns is now $35 rather than $20.

Target recently got a new CEO who agrees that the return policy is awful, and made the changes.

I swiched from buying/renting dvds to netflix and couldn't be happier. My suggestion: Go netflix. As someone else said, you can add it to your queue again if you want to rewatch (you'd have to add it ~3 times to come out to the same cost as buying for $7). You could always buy a movie you really love after renting it once or twice.

I've started trading my old dvds on swapadvd.com, at least the ones I don't really watch any more. The ones I am keeping are the ones I LOVE and could watch many many many more times. I am actually using swapadvd to replace the movies I don't really like any more with the ones I'd really like to own.

My goal: A carefully selected collection of dvds I really enjoy. For everything else - there is netflix!

To the folks on here suggesting Netflix, I would like to point out that we do indeed re-watch the movies we buy. We have watched most of our movies at least twice, and some probably dozens of times. The value is definitely there for us, especially when we buy the movies on sale or at a deep discount.

We don't buy all that many movies / TV shows on DVD (our 5-year average is less than 2 a month*), so we tend only to buy ones that we would want to watch multiple times.

Also, we frequently borrow movies from friends (better than Netflix because it's free) and loan ours out to them, so everybody wins.

To the folks on here suggesting Netflix, I would like to point out that we do indeed re-watch the movies we buy. We have watched most of our movies at least twice, and some probably dozens of times. The value is definitely there for us, especially when we buy the movies on sale or at a deep discount.

We don’t buy all that many movies / TV shows on DVD (our 5-year average is less than 2 a month*), so we tend only to buy ones that we would want to watch multiple times.

I agree. Target needs to stand behind their store policy, and should have made an exception for a store credit on discontinued items if the item is within the time limit of the return policy. However, I believe, outside of this incident, Target actually has a great return policy as compared with other popular stores - 90 days on most items.

Responding to Bill's comment. My wife and I have had two similar experiences trying to return gifts to two different Target stores in FL.

We didn't rollover and we fought with them for over an hour each time (trying to return unopened/unused wedding gifts with receipt) and they still refused to accept our returns.

We then followed up with letters to the stores and headquarters and received no response. That was three years ago and we haven't given them a dime since. Additionally, the experience was bad enough for my wife and I to campaign against the retailer at every opportunity. The sooner their policies put them out of business, the happier I'll be as a consumer.

Note to self: If you ever do buy dvds, don't buy them from Target.

I had an interesting experience at Target... I went to check the price on the one pound bag of fancy feast cat food, which sells at my local grocery for $2.49 per pound. (I had a bunch of $1 off coupons, and was buying them um in scads) There was no price on the shelf for one pound bags so I used the Scanner to check the price... it rang up at $6.99!!!! The price of a 3lb bag, which were right next to them. When I took it to customer service to inform them, they insisted that if that was the price in the computer, that must be the right price! Did I want to buy it?? Um... No... I wonder how many people who did not pay attention got charged that price???

Wouldn't it be more frugal to rent the DVD from Redbox (with a free code, of course) than buying one at $5.50? If the movie is no longer a new release that Redbox doesn't carry it anymore, then I think that you shouldn't have a problem getting it at the local library.

So as I see it, the options include:

1. Stop buying crappy movies. :)
2. Send a letter to Target corporate.
3. Dispute the charge with your credit card.
4. Get something in writing from Target, and then take it up in court.
5. Letter to FTC?
6. Don't bother with BBB, they are useless.
7. Stop shopping at Target. I had an issue with them - they refused to take back a chair I bought. Still in the box, clearly never been used, they still had it in stock. I didn't have a receipt, so I was out of luck. Went home and sold it on Craiglist. Cut out the middle man!

For 5 bucks a month you can get 1 movie at a time.
In one month, you can probably view up to 10 movies. Realistically, it will be more like 4-5 with a once per week watch schedule.

That is a lot better than buying them and taking up space in your house.
If you wanna rewatch it... simply re-add it to netflix..how hard is that?

It is great to have it on demand, but its not worth 5-10 bucks per movie.

PLUS, netflix has a growing number of "watch now" online movies and shows you can view. A 5 buck subscription gets you unlimited access. THAT is a good deal.

It's funny, someone complains about a store policy and then they have their tastes judged. WTF. Netflix and Blockbuster have limitations. What if you want to watch a movie more than once in your lifetime, then it's cheaper and more convenient to buy for under $7 or $8. Then on a Sunday afternoon after you've done all your chores for the weekend and it's too hot outside or too cold, you can pull a movie off the shelf and watch it. Try that with Netflix.

That is the risk you run buying old DVDs. It isn't Target, it is policy everywhere. Movies and games can only be exchanged for the exact same item, and if they don't have it then too bad.

My suggestion is save money and don't buy DVD movies ever. I seriously doubt you watch them multiple times and if so it definitely isn't enough to warrant owning them and having them take up space. There are all sorts of better solutions. Netflix comes to mind.

I worked at guest service at Target for a little over six months about two years ago. Target's policy is to exchange opened DVDs for identical DVDs with a receipt, and we were expected to follow that policy very strictly. The problem, of course, is that when you tried to return the defective DVD, Target did not have an identical one that you could exchange. This is not a common occurrence. In this case, the original guest service team member that you worked with would not have had the authority to simply give you a refund. In my opinion, the manager that you talked to next probably should have made an exception and issued you a refund. However, Target may have made their policies stricter since I worked there. If this is the case, then neither the original guest service team member nor the manager would have had the authority to resolve the issue. I can only think of two other things the people at Target could have done to help your situation. First, they could have done a product search, found out which other stores in the area do carry the DVD, call that store and put the DVD on hold for you, and have you drive to that Target to do the return. This would only be an option if you lived in an area with several Targets close by. Second, they could have called the customer service number for you to see if they could authorize the return for you. At the very least, they should have provided you with that number.(It is on the back of the receipt.)

The problem with these options is that guest service team members have little incentive to go above and beyond the call of duty to help you get back your $5.50. These options are also time-consuming, so if the guest service member was the only one at guest service or if it was a busy day, he/she simply may not have had the time to make several phone calls and try to make you happy. I know that others will say that it is the job of guest service to make customers happy, but please remember that most of these workers are young, are being paid very little, have little authority to make exceptions to posted rules, and have probably been yelled at several times already that day. If you really want to resolve your issue, call corporate. These are the people who can actually help you.

Why are you still buying DVD's in the first place? How often do you look at your collection of movies and think to watch them again? Also you have to deal with storing/displaying/moving all of the movies and cases.
The best way to deal with movies is subscription plans from netflix or blockbuster.

As others have said, get Netflix.

So far their customer service has been excellent. I've had two or three movies (out of about a hundred now) come in scratched, cracked, unplayable and they sent me another disc, no problem.

I had something like this happen at Best Buy about 5 years ago. I purchase a samurai film collection with a gift card. When I got it home I found that instead it contained 4 copies of "Frosty The Snowman". Funny now, then no so much, since the store 1. didn't have another one in stock and 2. the store that did wouldn't accept the return because they thought but didn't say out loud that I was pulling a fast one on them. All I wanted was to exchange the item, which the second store manager didn't let me do. He wanted me to go back to the first store and return the item and then go back to his store and buy it. After some poor customer service on his part, I finally had a kind employee buy my returned gift card for cash and I was able to save a trip back to the first store. All I can say is stores are fighting too hard for the small dollars and losing out on the repeat business.
