Congratulations on the KPTV and upcoming KGW features!

These are marketing opportunities personal finance professionals would die for, but here you are, the average guy that paid off $35k in debt sharing great tips about money.

Be sure to update your biography with these media features. I'm looking forward to sharing all these credentials with my industry insiders!

JD, I thought your TV thing was good. You seem like you like to choose your words carefully, which is part of what makes your writing great. I think you should find a way to verbally emphasize your main points, which you do so well on your blog by spacing and bolding words.

Your house is beautiful, you must love it!

I am trying to think of a contest I would have an excellent chance of winning, my public library has not had one of the personal finance books you have recommended. If I wasn't so frugal I would buy them and then donate them to the library!!

How about a contest of the most pathetic public library book selection, I think I might have a shot at that!!

To get rid of things I have always gone to Craigslist Free area. Often people there either need the items themselves, or will use them in a way that will help them earn some little extra dough. You can post anonymously, have caveats like 'must pick up all book', etc.

The problem with using them as gifts is it sounds like the books are old, perhaps not all of them great... plus then YOU have to mail them, which costs money. Anyways, try Craigslist.

As for facebook, I'm a 39 year old who just joined after undo pressure from several friends. It can be very cool and I have people who "post" items from several news sources that show up on my page. Main thing is by doing that you expand your scope and get US doing some of the work to get the word out about your great blog. I'll join your two pages you set up today, and stay tuned for how to post and share with my facebook friends.

Best,
Kim

JD, have you thought of just giving all the free stuff to me? ;)

You could have more of the "post a comment, get a reward" type of things?

Your interview went fine, don't worry about it. :D That's what they have editors for. lol

I don't know if this is worthy of a guest post, but i have to KEEP STRUGGLING with my friends to explain to them why this is such an AWESOME time to be investing in the market! (i'm in my late twenties).

In regards to the excess books, I would recommend the following: 1) posting a list of the books on your website and giving them away to some of your readers; 2) donating them to your local library; or 3) posting them on Paperbackswap.com and earn credits so you can later use them to request books you'd like to acquire. They're used, but many are in great condition and other than the postage it takes to send one of your books out, costs nothing.

Good luck on your TV interviews! Too bad I wont be able to see them being in Las Vegas, but you will do great!

Hi JD!

I have heard you mention many times your nervousness with public speaking and that the more you do the television appearances etc. the more comfortable you will be. Have you ever thought of looking for a local Toastmasters group? If you aren't familiar with the group, it is designed to be a group that meets to present speeches and other off the cuff speaking opportunities with the hope of improving your speaking and presenting abilities, as well as just making it more enjoyable to put your thoughts into words. I joined a group in my area a year ago, and have found the experience to be quite rewarding. As well as being a fantastic opportunity for personal growth and getting better in front of groups of people, I have found that it is also a great social event! We hold meetings at a local pancake house, so I get to enjoy chocolate chip pancakes during our meetings!

The website will allow you to find a group in your area, as well as give you some information on what it is all about.

I'd suggest you to consider donating part of your books to the local library. They will be well taken care of and they will serve the community. You seem to go there often, perhaps it's a way to give something back. Plus, if you ever need the books again they will be there waiting for you.

Cheers, D.

regarding facebook: You can post blog articles to facebook to share them with other people. To do this for one article just go to the "Share Link" option on your profile page (right beside update status). You can also set it to automatically import all articles from an rss feed, to do that go to the settings button underneath your status update bar, its on the far right.

RE: Sharing on facebook - I think it means that they'd like you to have a button (NYTimes, many news sites, etc. have them if you look up by the "e-mail" and "print" options) that automatically links up to facebook and allows them to post articles, then those articles will appear on their news feed and it's ultimately a great way to get a lot of links to GRS out there! i'm not sure how you'd go about doing it though, but take a look at each story page on nytimes.com to gather what i mean.

Can we make suggestions for you to write about?

I'm curious how to go about setting up an IRA as a self employed person without using a special financial person as a go-between (and thus have to pay them). We've been left hanging two times by our financial person.

When I read your post a while back (maybe quite a while) that pointed out that no one cares as much about your finances as you do, it hit home with me/us.

I appreciate your writing, JD because you don't speak in a lot of "financial insider talk" unless you explain what you are talking about. Most financial sites use insider language, that can be quite frustrating to learn. We have so much to learn, and to many of us, this financial stuff is just a PART of our lives...it isn't "our lives."

I know you mentioned that you wanted to give away your books to GRS readers, and there are great suggestions on how to do so above, but another option is to pick a local nonprofit or a few that teach personal finance classes to their clients. With limited resources, they would probably appreciate your donations, and the gifts might be tax-deductible for you!

You can search for local orgs at Idealist.org, post your donation request at cnrg-portland.org, or get suggestions from your readers...

Congrats on your appearances. Love your blog.

Brenda (#4), thank you for the information about freecycle. I had been assuming it was a US organisation only but I searched for my city in Australia and there are quite a few groups. I will check them out next time I want to get rid of things that can't go to the charity shop.

Giving away excess stuff is a good idea. I have seen posts on free sites like Craigslist asking to pick up free stuff whoever needs it.
Cheers,

Congrats on all your appearences! I think it's so great that you are able to do them and reach even more people.

I think Jac's idea concerning the materials is a good one.

J.D.,

I would offer to give away your excess stuff by setting up periodic contests. Set up properly, these might even be a better gauge for the effectiveness of your writing than simple feedback.

Even better, entice readers to submit those non-blogging guests posts by way of giving out free stuff. Given the state of the economy and everyone's shared interest in finance and personal growth, it would be a win-win.

Giving stuff away: if you really have a pile of finance books that you'd like to get rid of en masse, perhaps one way to go would be to open up a contest post, and have people post a comment saying what they would like to learn about. Then you could randomly select entries that matched up well with books you have, and send them out like that.

Re: facebook, perhaps they are looking for a forum on the facebook page? However I'm not sure that would really be a good idea, as you would begin duplicating the functionality already available here at the website, and forums benefit from having a single point of focus. Perhaps if you mentioned and linked to the grs forums from facebook...

I'm moving to the US next year, if there's anything interesting about creating a new financial life over there maybe I'll make an article out of it!

Sorry, I forgot to mention these were personal finance things I want to give away, and not just random Stuff. Very important point. This is stuff I want to give to GRS readers somehow...

I second Freecycle. I was able to get rid of a lot of stuff that thrift stores wouldn't take plus it's great knowing that someone really wants the stuff you don't.

J.D.,

My absolutely FAVORITE way of getting rid of stuff is Freecycle.

This is a yahoo group (there are hundreds across the country ... you find a local one near you) and the entire purpose of these groups is to offer to the group things you no longer want. It keeps the stuff out of landfills, but even better, you have folks come to YOUR HOUSE and get stuff you want to get rid of!!

Go to Yahoo Groups and in the search box put FREECYCLE PORTLAND, and find a group near you. (other readers, in lieu of the word PORTLAND, put your city).

Anyway, you post things you want to get rid of, and then you get a bunch of folks emailing you back saying they would like it, and you pick one, and they come pick up the stuff.

I've gotten rid of non-working VCR's, a 15 year old TV, a freezer full grains, flours, nuts, that were well over a year old, etc, etc. Truly proof of the adage "One man's junk is another man's treasure".

The only "rules" for Freecycle are that the items must be free, and be legal.
