Also instead of the above solution, have a neighbour come in once or twice a day to turn on all hot water taps in the building for a minute or so.

Hi J.D.,

Considering the cost of a frozen pipe that leads to a broken pipe, water damage everywhere, and an expensive visit from the plumber, I would suggest that you start insulating pipes where they're exposed to the Cold the most and keep circulating hot water through them. It's as simple as letting a light trickle of hot water come out of the tap. While that seems wasteful it's quite cheaper than the visit from the plumber.

I hope this gave you an idea what to do.

Best regards,
 Chris

J.D. - You're lucky you work from home! I had to MOVE into PDX from the burbs yesterday and quickly stock up on food and such for today's snow/ice. Let's say I was very relieved to get a call from my boss this morning saying we're closed...I plan on not leaving my bed. Ever.

Regarding the USA Today article, if you're dollar cost averaging then everything those people are saying is pretty much mute.

I saw the suggestion of mixing rock salt with calcium chloride on the referenced website above.

Here is a heads up:

1) Costco was selling CaCl for $15 for 50lbs. 50 lbs gets me thru at least one winter in NJ. But lets say I need 2 bags for blizzard conditions. Thats $30/year not so expensive.

2) Rock Salt is far more abrasive and destructive than CaCl. It will speed up the degradation of your black top or concrete. So if you save $5 on salt for 20 years but rob yourself of one year on a $2,000 driveway repair, you have saved nothing.
