Almost One Million! A Case of Shameless Self-Promotion
Published on - January 27th, 2009 (by J.D. Roth) While I’ve been coping with the recent drama in my personal life, Get Rich Slowly has quietly posted its best month ever. Roughly 850,000 visitors have dropped by to learn about personal finance. A quick calculation shows that I’ll finish the month with nearly 950,000 visitors.
So close to one million! And yet so far…
This leads me to a rare instance of shameless self-promotion. Many of you have asked what you can do to support this site. “Don’t click on the ads!” I always reply. “Instead, tell your friends. And link to your favorite articles.”
If you’d like to help me reach a million visits this month, please spread the word about Get Rich Slowly. If you have a blog or a Twitter account, link to your favorite posts. Link to articles about frugality or about investing or about gardening — I don’t care. Just link! Here are a few articles I’m particularly proud of:
- How to get out of debt
- How to start a Roth IRA (and where to do it)
- Which online high-yield savings account is best?
- The extraordinary power of compound interest
- My paperless personal finance system
- The psychology of happiness: 13 steps to a better life
- The power of “yes”: A simple way to get more out of life
- 27 money tips for college students
- 7 tips for starting your own vegetable garden
With your help, Get Rich Slowly just might see one million visitors in January. And then I won’t have to indulge in self-promotion until 2010…I hope.
One final note: I should be back here full-strength starting Friday! Thank you for your patience during this difficult time.
Update: I usually frown on people being self-promotional in the comments. Not today. Fair is fair, right? If I can do it, you can do it. In this thread, feel free to link to your site, and to describe what it’s about. I’m still going to put the kibosh on anything I consider spam (don’t link to your payday loan site!), but if you have a blog you want to share with GRS readers, post it here!

One million is amazing. Great work, JD. Just look at all these bloggers who’ve been inspired by you as well. I’m blogging at http://ptmoney.com where I’ve been discussing saving money, debt reduction, and frugality for almost 2 years now. Almost 200K in visits for me. Best of luck hitting 1Million and getting to 2Million even faster.

Congrats on almost reaching a million! I just started my blog a couple of months ago. It’s about my financial experiences as a recently married, 20-something homeowner. Also, I am about to be deployed with my National Guard unit, so that adds another wrench to the financial gears. Good luck!

I love your blog and I am SO EXCITED for you that its becoming so popular. Your personal story is inspirational, and so many folks can benefit from your advice. CONGRATS!
And take it easy while you deal with personal stress. If someone else employed you, they would give you personal days or bereavement leave. Give yourself the same.

I have been following your blog through my wife; she e-mails me the posts she thinks I should read. In a way, I enjoy a censored version of your blog
In the past year our finances have improved and that’s because we’ve worked hard at them. One of the reasons has been my wife discovering your blog, which have improved her personal finance skills, and by extension, mine.
Further, I decided to start my own blog back in December to pursue writing about something that I’m passionate about: Photography. While you might think you haven’t influenced a blog on photography, you have. Photography is an expensive hobby and unless you use good financial common sense you can end up with a hole in your savings and crappy photos. In fact, I am currently preparing an article about photography and finances, and I regularly preach about frugality when it comes to buying photographic equipment.
Thanks J.D.!

Hello JD!
I’ve been reading GRS for a couple months. About 6 months ago I made the decision to become debt free and increase the savings. I read your blog daily and will be happy to provide links.
I am sharing the information in my newsletter and on my website to a very specific niche. I have started recording my progress by have not put it online yet.

Wow! Lots of self-promotion here. It really brings out the lurkers, doesn’t it?
WAY TO GO on almost hitting a million! That is so awesome!
My biggest month so far was “only” 182,000 (big for me) … even to hit half a million would be amazing.
My website is http://www.joyfulabode.com/ and my blog is http://www.joyfulabode.com/blog .
There, I write about my forays into the domestic domain, including lots and lots of recipes, some decor ideas, cleaning/organization tips, a little bit of finance (though not much), and a few mentions of military life since my husband is in the Navy.
Wherever the Navy sends us though, we make sure to make our house a Joyful Abode. Each stop along the way so far has felt like Home, which is how I intend to keep it! Even the house we lived in for only 2 months… we totally unpacked, hung pictures on the walls, and Lived there.
We recently celebrated our freedom from debt, and we’re now vigorously saving for our emergency fund and retirement. When our emergency fund is full, we’ll be saving for a “baby car” which we plan to pay for with cash in a couple years.

I’ve just started my personal finance blog at the beginning of January. While still a neophyte, I’ve enjoyed posting, and hope to have a (smallish, encouraging) audience to help motivate me to financial freedom.

My blog is “i pick up pennies.”
I am disabled and work part-time. My husband is on unemployment and has health conditions.
So I look at strategies for frugality and debt reduction in a world of limited choices. When you can’t just go get a second job or cut lattes from the budget. When you may have to pay a little more (or do without) because you can’t make it to two grocery stores in one day.
Of course, all are welcome at this blog — not just folks with health issues. But I like to try and look at things from a new angle. I tend to assume my readers have already done the basic frugal tips and are still looking for ways to save/budget/cope.

JD, this is one of four PF blogs I (lurkishly) follow, and yours is the one that consistently offers the most practical advice. Thanks for that.
For my own self-promotion, check out Caddickisms at http://www.caddicks.com/blog – it’s currently getting about … oh… 1/10,000th of the visitors you get, so here’s your chance to be a well-appreciated visitor!
It’s one of those non-focused blogs, but I hit on Personal Finance every once in a while.

Congrats on almost reaching a million! Using your sitemeter link I see that, currently, they say you’ve had 972,854 for January! (Though that number hasn’t changed no matter how many times I refresh the page. For all I know, you’re already over a million!) Oh so close!
And now for my self-promotion: I’m blogging about my wife’s and my financial goal that we call geographic independence. To us, that term means being able to travel and/or live where ever we’d like without lowering our standard of living. Which means we’re mostly focused on maximizing the income we get from other than “active” job sources, such as savings, interest, dividends, but also new businesses and even options trading.
Thanks for the opportunity to mention my site!

My husband reads your blog all the time and he said I should come over and shameless self-promote about my blog: AddictedToCostco.com. I write about all the great stuff they sell at Costco. I do reviews of the items I buy, post about the coupon books, and I’ve even done a full comparison with the grocery stores in our area to prove that Costco can really save you money and you’ll get better quality products usually too!
