Great post.
The hamster wheel of constantly having something new and chasing every trend isn't sustainable, even for the truly wealthy.
Honestly I don't feel doing that even if I had the funds to do so would bring any quality of life or happiness. Finding what you really enjoy or value and cutting out the rest will bring you more happiness than simply doing what everyone else does.

I agree wholeheartedly with this article. As an avid knitter, I will pay a bit more for fibers that hold their shape and color and feel luxurious to the touch. I bought a $24 skein of Colinette Iona yarn and knitted into a beautiful warm, soft scarf last winter. That said, I also love my new $20 Sears watch, too.

Great post Philip-- I am a fan from Wisebread.

Frugality isn't about denial, it is about choices. Spending less in one area (say, clothing) allows you spend more in another (fine wine) . . .

Simple concept . . .

We love being frugal bon vivants. We hosted a wine tasting last week featuring an assortment of high-end local wine - bottles my husband got for free after a work event - along with local, grass-fed beef bought on sale and one of my husband's simple, brilliant desserts; prepared at home and enjoyed in the company of good friends. This is the life.

@ Tyler Karaszewski:

To my mind, that's where patience comes in. No doubt some people are terribly sure at an early age about the whole scope of what they want. (I fear such people are likely to be disappointed by life no matter what advice they get--life is full of compromises, both budgetary and not.)

Instead, start asking which part seems most crucial? Living near Santa Barbara? Owning land? Working with horses? Participating in racing events? There are ways to do any of those things on a budget--volunteering on a ranch, for example, would let you work with horses while learning something about what owning a ranch might be like.

If you take the time to learn more, you might find that your first thoughts about exactly what you want to do have changed. Maybe, with due consideration, you'll decide that you'd rather live in Kentucky. Maybe you'll decide that goats are more interesting than horses. Maybe you'll decide that working on someone else's horse ranch in Santa Barbara is more fun than having the headache's of ownership.

Maybe, if you take your time, you'll be able to put together exactly what you want (if your investment portfolio happens to be way up right at the moment when Santa Barbara ranch land is way down--and a guy who trusts you with animals because you've worked together simply has to sell).

I'd like to have a private railroad car and use it to travel around the country. The fact that I haven't managed to fit that into my budget doesn't make me feel like I'm "constantly making compromises." At least, not in a bad way.

I think it makes sense to pick three or four categories that are important to you (will depend on the individual) and spend more for the best (or better) in those categories. For me, when I travel I want to stay in the "best" hotels and resorts (the definition of best changes, sometimes its a small B& B and other times its a large 5 star hotel) and therefore I spend to do so although I also always have a travel budget and save up for my vacations and travel.

Another category that I spend more on than most, is art. I only buy real art (some of which is cheaper street art, but still art from an artisan) and would rather have blank walls than prints.

As for wine and food, most of the time this is not a category that is very important to me (unless I'm on vacation) and therefore I don't tend to spend a lot of money for the best wine and food.

If I can give my advice, always look for quality. To often we look for name brands since the marketers tell us it is quality. A hand stiched suit can be easily found if take the time to look around instead of walking into Macy's and throwing down your credit card. Fit, Fit Fit and good tailoring for all clothes.

Quality food is easy to find. First, don't buy prepackaged. Organic can be good at times but not necessarily better depending on product (apples yes, oranges no).

I always have to tell my sister, a tall statuesque blond, you make the trends, don't let others make it for you.

Great article! I'm glad to see more frugalites focusing on living large on a budget instead of depriving oneself. I'm proud to be picky -- whether it comes to food, clothes, furniture, books, electronics, etc. Quality not quantity! That's my motto! And though I might spend a bit more on items, it also keeps me from filling my house with lots of crap.

Sure, I could eat on a buck or two a day, and not buy anything unless it was on sale AND I had a coupon, but good, healthy food is just so much more satisfying. It's all about balance! Moderation in everything -- even moderation!

And no, one doesn't have to spend a lot to live well. Since my husband and I have started focusing our energy and other resources on what we REALLY want, we've managed to turn around our finances. We're finally headed in the right direction and still picking up speed.

It seems the best way to live a "rich life" on a budget is to discard the standard notion of what constitutes a "rich life" and make up your own definition.

The hard part is that once you've made up your own definition of what you think is a "rich life", it's not necessarily going to be any more affordable than the standard one. Sure, you could say that a big house and a fancy car and expensive vacations at tropical resorts aren't your thing, and that's fine if they're not, but if you decide that "your thing" is owning a ranch outside Santa Barbara and raising horses to try and compete in the kentucky derby, well sure, it's off the beaten path, but it's hardly "on a budget".

What do you do when what you really want still costs more than you can afford? Will you feel like you're living a rich life if you're constantly making compromises?

Great advice. I read reviews all the time. It is amazing how often you come across a review that tests very a expensive product versus a less expensive one and the less expensive brand wins. Sometimes its not just about price as far as getting the best quality.

BTW, nice site redesign. Are you using the Thesis theme?

I've been following your blog on google reader for quite some time but I think this is my first comment. This entry was very well received by me. I'm going to be unemployed starting Friday and before this week I'm a person of indulgence. I still have an emergency fund but now I feel I need to cut back if not completely on the restaurant and entertainment expenditures.... so this gave me a bit of light. Thank you very much!

I still have an emergency fund but now I feel I need to cut back if not completely on the restaurant and entertainment expenditures…. so this gave me a bit of light. Thank you very much!

One of my favorite tricks is to make friends with people who are passionate about things that I like. For example, I really enjoy live music, but I don't have the time, energy, or money to download thousands of songs and then figure out what bands are best live. But I have many online friends who do have that time. By reading their blogs, I discover all sorts of great artists well before they begin to get radio play, and I can go see them in smaller venues without paying an arm and a leg. My family and friends are blown away by the number of bands and performers I've seen long before they were household names.

In the same way, I like wine a lot, but I'm dedicated enough to spend time reading up on different vintages or wineries. Instead, I chat now and then with a couple of wine fanciers that I know and ask them for recommendations. The side benefit is that the more I talk with them, the more they know about my particular tastes, and the better their recommendations get.

As a personal finance blogger who loves to travel, let me tell you that I wish I had written this post. My favorite 'fresh' gourmet is tomato, fresh mozzarella, and basil, drizzled with some olive oil, some fresh cracked pepper, and a bit of salt.

All for about $4. It makes a great sandwich if you put it on a baguette as well.

I believe the saying is "to each his own," but finding that niche can be difficult. Great tips all around!! To me a lot of this comes down to one of personal finances basics - a budget.

With a budget you then have the ability to make the proper decisions based on income and expense. This allows you to have the TV dinner when necessary and splurge on the bottle of wine for your Sunday picnic as well.

One area that seems to always gobble up the most money is alcohol! I wrote a blog regarding just that: http://www.twentysomethingsense.com/2009/05/how-much-do-you-spend-a-year-on-alcohol.html

Nice article Philip. I am 23, starting my career (as a Software Engineer ;) ) and have already tasted the experience of the first principle: "Confidence".

As I and many of my friends stepped out of Grad Schools, it was like everybody has started feigning ultimate luxuries (fat paychecks?) Initially I started to feel disquited but then having confidence in yourself is the only way to keep yourself going.

My fiance and I live a rich life following many of the tips Mr. Brewer outlines in this post (and the book). I've actually learned that much of the difference in expensive wines to cheaper wines is the region the wine is made. Blind taste tests often show only the most spoiled of pallets can tell the difference.

Oh, and I have read the book and it is fantastic. Be sure to pick one up!

I like the idea of living a rich life. My husband and I have been trying this in our own lives. We have found that we can truly enjoy life if we take time out to do simple things, while saving up money to do some "big" things on occasion.

Great post. You have described me...and given shape to the argument I often have to make around here: education in what is good (or "best") is not snobbery; neither is it knee-jerk crowd- or celebrity-following. It is a sort of self-interested research, so that you don't miss the good stuff on your once-around trip.
