He started me tracking Exxon stock weekly at age 9, and I learned about stock splits etc. Because he was depression baby, we grew up never ever wasting food (things that rarely went bad were composted) and I know a ton of cheap recipes (and understand the mark-up on sodas at restaurants) and how to cook. He taught to look at the price per unit at the grocery store, and to buy quality where it matters. We never had the newest stuff because our college accounts were fully funded (my American mom’s concession to ultra-frugality).

Now that I have a Phd in economics we disagree about some things– my time is too valuable to try to beat the market so I do low fee index funds. I swore I would never be hot or cold again so we’ve got central a/c and if I have to wear gloves indoors that means it is time to turn the heat up. Since my hourly wage is higher, I don’t generally bother with unit prices or double checking receipts, but those practices stood me in good stead during the lean years of graduate school.

Now…the title box and first box, you’re holding the cell with your right hand. The second box, you’re using your left hand to hold the cell as you talk. Next, you toss the cell into the trash with your right hand.

In the next box, you’re pouring coffee with your right hand. After that, you’re using the mouse with your left hand. Then, of course, you’re slapping your face with your right hand.

Are you ambidextrous? If so, no continuity issues.

I think they did a great job of teaching me, but that like most things that are learned in childhood, I had to spend some time rebelling and re-learning the lessons for myself. I wish I would have been able to pick it up the first time, but I’m glad I have a solid foundation (from them) to build on now that I finally “get it.”

I wonder if you are going to put on your “GetRichSlowly” hat and notice something cool down there to write about for your site when you get back?

I think I would, but only for a few minutes per day.

Congratulations on finishing your books! That must be one of the best feelings you can have. I love the comics, I can imagine you writing it and getting an inspiration and then sprint through the book.

On your polling: I feel that my Dad was a great financial influence…we used to watch CNBC daily during lunches on summer breaks, and he’d explain what was going on, and what it affected (I certainly didn’t understand it all…he has a finance degree and works as an accountant). I didn’t really care, because it was just cool to hang out with my Dad, but alot of the info stuck, and it’s certainly influenced me over the years. Avoiding debt was the main take-home message in all of it.
