EDIT: I work for a private company but they decided to give us tomorrow off, and with the option of not coming in on Tuesday, lol. It was showing an ideal that it wished to encourage but the reality of life for people may not have reflected this that much. Plus it presumes white, middle class, christian, heterosexual norms with gender stereotypes--as the ideal. Best not to view the world that way. However, I must disagree with your statement that war "brewed in Europe" in July 1940. Most historians recognize the Sep 1, 1939 invasion of Poland as the beginning of WWII. War was not brewing in July 1940, it was already raging, with significant loss of life, and it was not restricted to Europe. For example, South Africa, India, Canada, and Newfoundland all declared war on Germany in Sep 1939. The United States of America maintained a policy of neutrality until the attack on Pearl Harbor, but the war actually began over 2 years prior to Pearl Harbor.
