I'm pretty late to the party (and haven't read all the comments) but I just wanted to chime in and say that I am pleased and impressed to see you taking this stance and being firm and clear about it. One of my other favorite blogs is moderated in the same way, and this kind of stance is one of the things that leads to intelligent conversations that can be full of arguments but still enjoyable to read and participate in. If you ever have any doubts about this stance, please don't entertain them; this is the right way to deal with personal attack comments!

I love that this STILL became more discussion on whether you should have posted that article. I still think you were right in doing so, mostly because as a GRS reader, I don't read every single post because they don't always apply, I read the ones that do apply to me or I find interesting. I'd hate to think you'd be filtering out topics just because SOME people don't find them applicable. Also, your reasoning to delete the nasty, pointless comments is completely OK with me, as a reader, because I already think people are much nastier online than they'd ever be in person, and it's about time that someone took a stand against it! Thanks, JD, for all of your continued efforts!!

Unfortunately the more popular this site gets the more people will read and comment..and then the Bell Curve of politeness in the population starts to show.

It's great that you are fighting the good fight..but it might start getting a little tougher down the road if there a tons of comments (or something like 4chan take over).

I love the comment policy on "The Big Picture" which I've excerpted below:

5B: Comments by Trolls and Asshats:

The Big Picture is my personal fiefdom. Fear my wrath, mortals! I will ban anyone whom I choose from posting comments -- usually, for a damned good reason, but on rare occasions, for the exact same reason God created the platypus: because I feel like it.
On occasion, I will "unpublish" a comment if I feel it is too impolite, harsh, ad hominem, inappropriate. Off-topic posts have been rising, and I have taken to unpublishing them en masse. If you find yourself publishing way too many comments, consider this: This humble blog is my forum for expressing my ideas. Get your own damned blog.
The fastest way to lose posting privileges is to misrepresent your host's complex and nuanced views in some inane bumper sticker comment. Other fast tracks to getting banned:
- Knowingly posting false or malicious material;
- multiple postings under different names;
- generally engaging in troll-like behavior;
- misquoting your host/overlord;
- being impolite in the extreme;
- using fake/mislabelled URLs;
- ad hominem attacks;
- being an asshole.
Right now, someone is reading this and saying to themselves "What does he mean, being an asshole?" If you wondered that to yourself, well the odds strongly favor that you yourself have sphincter-like qualities. Thus, you should consider it likely that you will be banned as a rectoid from posting comments sometime in the near future.

Well said JD. My mom used to always tell me if you do not have anything nice and decent to say than you need to zip it.... It is a shame that people are so rude. I read this story and found it to educational and another take on finances during the big "D". Thank you for keeping your site educational and informative, without the rudeness. Have a Fabulous & Frugal Day!!!

JD--

I think you've done a great job of moderating without censoring.

I'll dissent from you on this point though: I believe that a majority of the responses to that article were negative. I haven't done a thorough count, but i'd say the disapproving comments win by 3:2 or 2:1 approximately.

If anything, that only goes to show that you've done a good job of letting people express their criticism even if you disagree with them. That's as fair as it gets with civilized discussions, and you should be commended for it.

I am a reader of GRS and an occasional commenter. I agree that comments that are hateful and disrepectful should be removed. Over the years when joining instant chat groups or joining in on chat groups in game rooms or just reading a blog, I found myself leaving them once the comments starting going toward rude, hateful, disrespectful and completly outrageous comments. Some I go back and see if the comments are back to what the purpose of the chat is and they were still rude and instulting.

Like one of the commenters said, I disagree with you is better than saying I disagree with you B*tch.

I read the article from Mandy three times now and agree, she was keeping the emoitional component out of her article and I think for this kind of topic, leaving the emotional component out is better.

She stated the facts, she made the most money, husband never really contributed to the expenses until she reminds him and she knew that if the divorce happens, it would be a long and tortuous road of being in and out of the court of having to deal with the husband not paying the child support and other expenses.

So setting up a trust fund was a smart thing to do and it showed that she was thinking of the future. It worked for her to put down everything in a spreadsheet to see the whats and hows and she can easily move the numbers around to see what works better for them.

For her and her family, this was the right choice. As one lady commented, she thought she was alone and by reading Mandy's article, she realized that she was not and maybe she can follow Mandy's example or at least know what her choices are.

We need to trust JD to put down what he thinks is relevant to his site and keep what is not relevant to his site out and we have the right to agree/disagree with the choices JD made in publishing certain articles on his site. As long as we are respectful, we should hope it would be a long time before we see another article from JD regarding removing the inappropriate comments.

Keep up the good work JD

Thank you for this post JD. I rarely leave comments but often read them and some of the ones that were left after this particular reader story (which I DID find befitting your site) really bothered me.

So thank you for spelling out the comment policy. And please keep up the great site!

After reading the ridiculous divorce post and your apology for it, I think I'll continue to get my financial advice elsewhere.

<div class="greatcomment">
I think one thing that readers don't understand, and I found out with my reader story post, is that a lot of the tone and back story can be lost in editing. I noticed that Mandy's post didn't go into her feelings, which were obviously complicated, it simply gave a short financial background and her financial path forward. The thought that that's the complete story is absurd. For a story like this to be communicated in 1500 words or so means a LOT is left out.

After my post I was accused of being bitter about my misfortune because what I had written about coming to terms with my financial loss was left on the cutting room floor. I was accused of not thinking things through because explanations are dropped for brevity. What drives me crazy is not only the mean tone but the ASSUMPTIONS people make to fill in an entire back story and then respond to the strawman, especially when any idiot can see that there is obviously so much more to the story.

It's hard to put yourself out there, even if a comment isn't true the venom in it can have an impact if it's directed at you. The comments I merely disapproved of as a reader took on a whole new meaning when I was the writer. My experience took the fun out of participating in comments. I hope Mandy is less sensitive than I.

Thanks for keeping the blog civil, I totally agree with deleting hateful unproductive comments.

Regarding the article, perhaps it was the writer's tone that set people off. I personally thought it was very rational and a brilliant solution (setting up a trust out of the joint assets) for protecting the children. Obviously there is more to the story but in a finance article the emotional aspects were not pertinent or necessary to share.

Kudos JD. It's sad that a lot of people don't have anything nice to say. They could get their point across without being so crude.

I really appreciated the post, and I don't think it needed a "We don't approve of divorce!" tag any more than the "how to get out of debt" posts need a "Debt is bad!" preface.

The number of articles in the PF world that deal with marriage and pretend like divorce doesn't exist is ridiculous, and the lack of that viewpoint here is one of the reasons I'm still here long after I've given up on most pf blogs.

Not everything posted on this blog is going to apply to my life entirely. It's interesting to see different approaches to finances, even if they include a really controversial issue (i.e. divorce). After reading the article, I kind of felt like the author (or editor) intentionally stayed detached because it's such a charged emotional item. I'm probably wrong about that, but that's how I felt at the time.

That being said - there is a HUGE difference between disagreeing constructively and making comments like the one in this post. It's amazing to me what people will post simply because they are hidden behind a computer.

Congrats J.D. for being an effective moderator. In the past I have stopped visiting sites where the comments or forum section got increasingly ugly, and nothing was done about it. Some moderators simply tell complaining visitors to avoid the comment section, but I think that having that kind of hateful speech on the site at all lowers the tenor of the entire site.

I think you do a great job of drawing the line between what is and isn't acceptable, and as long as moderating doesn't take too much time from other aspects of the site, I think you should continue with the guest posts. Even if I disagree with the author, or their financial situation is so different from mine that I can't relate, I think it's a good idea to get different views on how people manage their finances.

It's something that isn't honestly talked about, sometimes even within families. It's useful to see what motivates people's decisions, or how they handled a crisis - even if all I pick up is what NOT to do.

In comparison to most other "news" sites or blogs, I think J.D. does a great job of walking the line between keeping the trolls away and censoring the conversation. I come here for a lively, thoughtful discussion about topics I find interesting. I stay away from Yahoo news because I'm tired of hearing how everyone is a "nazi". Thanks for keeping it classy J.D.!

A note about the divorce post: I really enjoyed it and would have liked more detail about how the trust was set up for the kids. I never really understood how that works and it could apply to many different situations, not just divorce. People need to take a step back from judging everyone else's actions, especially because this is a blog about finance.

I just want to add my thanks, JD, for your thoughtful policy on comments and clear explanation.
I'm sure it takes a lot of your time just to weed through them. I don't know about everyone else, but when I read things like your second example, it just pisses me off and makes me think less of that person. Who needs that in their conversation?
I don't know what would make people think that because they read a small part of a story they understand the complexity of another person's life.

When a comment gets deleted, would it be possible to skip the post number? For example, if you delete comment #15, can the remaining posts jump from #14 to #16? This would lead to a little less confusion when a commenter refers to previous posts.

That story helped me. I thought I was the only working woman supporting a working husband who doesn't contribute towards household expenses. It truely helped me to read the story and one comment from a woman in a silmilar situation, I didn't feel so alone and stupid. Maybe there is a way out of my horrible unfair existance. Maybe there is a man out there who would share a partnership, not just use someone for free room and board. Beyond that emotional issue, there is a lot of useful financial info in the story: disucss financial sharing before marriage, understand how assets acquired before marriage are distributed in divorce, forge financial and responsibility agreements in marriage. Money doesn't have to be equally contributed, but if one feels the overall financial/logistical/emotional support dynamic is imbalanced, it is death for the partnership.

JD, as usual, you are a great manager/editor/writer/leader of the GRS site and community. Thanks for editing away the nasties. Why someone takes time from their day to insult strangers is beyond me.

As a child of divorce, I agree its a tough topic, but nothing in the post brought up strong emotions for me, personally. I thought it was perfectly appropriate for the site (although I didn't read it closely, as I'm not married)!

Keep up the great work.

As a long term reader but first time commenter, I would say that the post in question was great to read and I went on to view her website and read a lot of useful content there afterwards. Divorce, especially when you have children, is disastrous on many levels but the financial hit is in some ways the worst. I would fully support any similar posts in the future, especially from those who are supporting children.

Mandy was brave to share her story.

Obviously she was not callous about the divorce, she simply chose to focus on the financial aspect of the event instead of the emotional process. Couples who do not share the same values are not going to succeed together. Mandy took the pragmatic, mature route IMHO.

I'm supportive of JD's deletion of abusive, name calling, callous responses.

It is your blog and you are free to run it however you choose. You are being up-front and consistent about your policies which we can all appreciate.

Anyway, it is unlikely that the haters who have their comments purged are really fully contributing to your community in a positive way.
