I read this years ago. Gene Roddenberry used to keep a copy of this in his office – along with the serenity prayer, even tho I’m pretty sure he claimed to be an atheist.

Much of this poem is beautiful, though certain sentiments are a little Panglossian: “no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should” always makes me cringe. A lot of unnecessary suffering unfolds every day. It’s hard to feel so peaceful in the face of it.

I also don’t believe there’s some omnipotent, benevolent planner, and I think that’s the prerequisite for this poem making any sense.

My favorite part of the poem is the part about not comparing yourself to others..It’s so true but also hard to follow.

Thank you for that.

That is the piece that was read out on my favorite radio station every evening when the sun set, from the moment I found out about radio until I moved out of range. It followed one minute of silence in memory of victims of violence.

Here is a recording of that particular reading, from that particular station. It is a reading which still informs and colors my view of life.

It has been a great year. For me, it has been a year of paying off debts, while still living an exciting life in South Florida.

Our lives are hopefully changing in the near future (it’s still a secret), and I’ll no-doubt be writing about our experiences on my website.

Beautiful poem. Very motivating to be a better person. Who would not love to be around someone with these traits?
