I thought the estate planning article was great, too. I envied the author her father's careful planning and thought.

When I went home for Christmas last week, I asked mom out of the blue, because it had been weighing on my mind partly due to the article, a question about her and dad's future plans.

I was relieved and touched to hear that she'd also done some similar things; she told me where to look for a box containing everything I could ever ask for in order to take care of them/their estate when the time comes.

I now have real peace of mind, and without that article I wouldn't likely have felt comfortable asking in the first place, let alone know what needed to be included (and was).

Thanks for the review. I seem to have missed the articles on "Is an MBA worth it" and "How to Learn a Foreign Language". They were both really helpful.

Cheers and Happy 2012!

I also heard you speaking on Marketplace Money and have been coming to your blog ever since! I look forward to reading the posts everyday and often look through the archives. I have also told several other people about Get Rich Slowly. Thanks for everything!

I third the kudos for “What My Father’s Death Taught Me About Estate Planning.” My one goal for 2012 is to get our estate plan in order, and I've bookmarked that article for future reference.

I also liked the reader story "What My Father’s Death Taught Me About Estate Planning". In fact, I showed it to my parents several weeks ago. My dad liked it so much, he sat down with me and my sister last night to walk us through all his estate planning. My parents were able to discuss their desires (e.g., healthcare directives, charitable giving), where everything is located (such as safe deposit keys), and his lawyer and his financial planner now have all our contact info. Thanks JD!

I'v been following this blog since JD's second year, and I love it! Keep up the great work in 2012!

Just curious, do you think your historical winners are somewhat pre-determined by the first year, as every time you do a round-up post like this, wouldn't it lead people to check out those particular posts more than other posts from those years?

Great summary of well-written articles. I'm sure that 2012 will be as great, if not greater.

Congratulations to both you and your staff writers!

I thought that the reader story "What My Father’s Death Taught Me About Estate Planning" was a gold mine of information. I will probably refer back to that article over and over again.

"Beating the Single-Shopper Penalty" by Donna Freedman was informative and entertaining. Even though I'm not a single-shopper, I appreciated some of the tips in the article. I especially loved how she named her freezer Chester. :)

One article this year linked back to April Dykman's post "Should You Buy It? A Flowchart for Evaluating Potential Purchases" from 2009. I started subscribing to this blog about a year ago, so I appreciated the link back to that very helpful older post.

"Outsmarting Myself" and "Spend on the Things You Do Every Day" were the two stories that made the most significant psychological impact on me this year. In essence, both espouse working with Who I Am Right Now rather than Who I Might Be Someday or Who I Think I Should Be Instead.

For example, within a week after reading April's piece, I took a big pile of exercise equipment and DVDs to Goodwill, and I've been wearing my pedometer every day since. Workouts were sporadic for me at best, but walking is a daily activity. I decided I'm far more likely to hit 10,000 steps a day just going about my life than I am to stick to a separate exercise routine that requires a chunk of time and a change of clothes. The latter I've tried -- and failed -- to do for over a dozen years.

Keep up the good work! I only started following GRS this year after I heard about you on "Marketplace Money", but I have already learned a lot from the new articles and the archives.

The hands-on articles are great, but I find that the behavioral/psychological articles stay with me the longest and have the most long-term impact on how I think about and work with my money. Ideas like expectation management, anchoring, and sunk costs (just to name a few) are worth talking about.
