Thanks! That helps a lot.

I don't drive and don't own (or plan to buy) anything else that would require an installment loan. But I will aim to get a secured credit card as soon as possible and work on rebuilding my credit with that.

If people can't or don't want to do math, or they don't care about the longer-term consequences of their decisions, then there is little that you can do for them. The best you can do is seize all or part of their financial assets to manage on their behalf (e.g. Social Security). I don't understand ...

If you have a credit score low enough that you cannot take out new loans or credit cards, what is the best way to improve it? I am thinking, after I pay off all my credit card debt, that I might try to get a secured credit card, but I'm not sure how much those affect one's credit score. Honestly, af...
