As soon as they earn an income they can contribute (and thus they must file taxes).

I agree that trivial hurdles drop participation but I think it's more ignorance of their availability, because they don't advertise as much, than the membership rules.

What do you do for a living? Now, I'm a personal finance blogger, but I was once a consultant in the defense industry, writing software that helped make things more efficient and traceable (had plenty of work, as you can imagine!). What is your career? Now I write about personal finance, this is a g...

By law, all credit unions have to have some demographic requirement you need to fulfill. Whether it's based on where you live, where you work, who you are related to, where you volunteer, what organization you've joined, etc. they all need to have some sort of restriction. Usually it's fairly trivia...

I think part of it is advertising, people just don't know about the smaller CU's and community banks, but it's also convenience. I know that Bank of America is huge and that I can probably find a BoA ATM wherever I go and avoid ATM fees. For many people, that's enough. I know that CU's can be conven...

One downside is that sometimes episodes disappear after a few weeks, so you'll have to watch them quickly!

It sounds like you considered all the situations, I would go with the cheaper option. Insurance will cover worse case scenarios and it sounds like for the standard cases you get to keep close to a thousand dollars in your pocket. If things don't work out, you can always switch back next year right?

The tip only works with large companies where there's wiggle room in the process, if there is no ambiguity then this tip would never work. :)

I would go with the target retirement fund too, the one thing to know about those funds are that their expense ratios (annual fees) are typically higher than an index fund but they give you a simple no-brainer investment because they will adjust their holdings as the date nears, going from riskier t...

I can't speak to the CD (though I would be ecstatic is my Roth IRA had a positive return, however small, this past year!) but I would avoid that financial adviser at all costs. You always want to talk to a fee only planner, where you pay for their time, rather than one where you pay nothing and they...

You don't have to itemize to claim student loan interest:

I think it's fine either one you choose to be honest.
