Little Red Chief went with me to the bank last week and we opened his savings account. He did a great job waiting while they worked through the paperwork, etc. He then happily walked over to the tellers and made his first deposit: $0.37.

... basically if you have a kid you are more likely to go bankrupt or be more stretched financially. One point she makes is that families without kids are way better off economically. That's easy to believe. Kids are undeniably a drain on finances. That said, though, I also think that the extra cos...

We've been starting to think seriously about allowances. I've been poking around and it seems like there are quite a few things to consider. Here's my list of things to think about so far: ⋅ When to start ⋅ How much will they get ⋅ What are they expected to use it for &...

I am about 11 months away from quitting my job and taking a year to travel the world. The money I am saving will have to get me through that year and at least 3 months back in the states (job hunting buffer). Congratulations! Good luck, and have fun. My biggest concern is what to do about my loan. ...

My parents never matched my casual savings when I was a kid (because I was pretty naturally inclined to save, so they joked they couldn't afford it), but I'll offer this up as an idea for when they're older. When I got my first "real" job (for me was after my freshman year of college as a...

"There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say," returned the nephew. "Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round--apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and ...

Sorry Mr. Mordecai for introducing American Girl topic in your little boy's savings thread. Just substitute game boy or remote controlled car, etc when we talk about it! On the contrary. Thanks for introducing me to a part of today's culture that I missed out on growing up. I mentioned the dolls to...

Giving money away obviously has nothing to do with getting wealthy. It is a direct hindrance to getting wealthy. Giving money away may be admirable in its own right, but it is in direct contradiction to "getting rich." Giving money away can never help you get richer. If your goal is to ge...

With all due respect to the current thread of conversation and its participants, what advice did we all actually have for the original poster? Personally, I would: 1) Pay off the tickets 2) Eliminate any credit card balances (none were mentioned, but if there are any, they should disappear) 3) Put a...

She came to me with the problem that her piggy bank had completely filled up. What a great problem to have! If only we were all so lucky :) When I was growing up any money I put into my savings account my father would match (as long as we didn't withdraw it say within 2 months). I've heard of other...

I thought it was from Merchant of Venice , though, not Hamlet , which is where it really comes from. In any case, I just thought it was a simpler way to convey the sentiment than to...
