This month my wife and I finally got our credit card balances down to zero (from over $40K). 8) Among the warm fuzzy feeling came a rude shock from CreditKarma, that lowered my credit utilization letter grade from A (three weeks ago, before the final payment got reported, at 6% utilization) to C (to...

I can't help but echo most of the above. One quick question (from a fellow NFCU member), though - have you called NFCU to ask for an interest rate reduction on your Flagship card? Sometimes it's just that simple. I was in a similar situation, and gradually built up a $2K savings account while paying...

Could be the loan balances. Or, it could just be time. How old is your oldest account, and what's the average age of all your accounts? My understanding is this also affects you credit score.

Oldest is 24yrs, average is 11yrs. They give me an "A" for that. :geek:

Another quick update. Late last year I refinanced the car loan from 4.9% (dealership) down to 2.75% (credit union), with no fees. 8) This morning I sent in the payment that will zero out my total credit card balance, bringing my credit utilization to 0.0%. So, milestone #2 reached, and milest...

I wanted to post an update here, and mid-stream thank everyone here who has inspired me to get this far and beyond... Yesterday I sent off the payments that zero out one credit card, and pull the balance on the other down to what it was early last year. In other words, one of my two credit cards is ...

I just ran across another potential option. With Amazon Prime ($79/yr I think, with a one-month free start), there are a bunch of movies and tv series that are free to view. The catches are that it is difficult to sort through the lists, and that 60% of the content is not free with Prime membership....

VinTek and DH, we'll have to agree to disagree about whether registration could be a stepping-stone to confiscation. But one thing I missed is whether either of you are in favor of federal/universal registration of firearms, and if so, what you think it would accomplish. In looking for support of it...

At this stage I will bow out of the conversation around my situation as it appears you believe you know more about my personal finances than I do, and arguing about it serves no purpose. |( We will have to agree to disagree that using a credit card to build a credit rating is a good thing, and abou...

Feinstein bill is interesting. The main thing I oppose the greatest is the national registry. Good luck getting me to sign up for that. Why? Yeah, I've heard the argument that it's the first step in taking all guns away, but there's really no evidence of that. Here in CA, if you want to sell someon...

Another question - you mention being flown out for an interview. Will the new job require a relocation for you? If so, local cost-of-living is a factor to consider (and possibly include if you do try to negotiate salary).

If you (or an immediate family member) were in the military, I'd strongly recommend checking out NFCU or USAA.

Not much new I can add, but there are two different questions at work here -- a financial one and a psychological one. Your math -- in which I can't find error -- shows that you *could* save a lot of money by taking the balance transfer. But psychologically, can you trust yourself to continue payin...

Sorry for the necro... I've been paying the CCs down steadily, at about $2K/mo. In November I got an offer from CC#2 to do a balance transfer at 6% (plus 3% fee), so with a minor credit limit boost on that card I transferred about $12K from CC#1 (the higher-rate card) to CC#2 (the lower-rate card wi...
