From what I know building your own HTPC can be problematic. The main issue finding compatible components that can go to sleep and wake up fine, since you don't want to be shutting down your HTPC every night... I have been using an HTPC from HP for a year and pretty happy. I think I paid around $700 ...

My experience has been that a bit of bouncing around from one card to another doesn't have a major impact on your credit score.
