I think the key to having a summer/vacation house is having it be somewhere that is easy to get to. Ours is within an hour of 50+% of our family and within 2 hours for 80+%. That means it's easy to get there, even just for a day. So true! I think this is where people who own vacation homes make a m...

I suppose the biggest question regarding a collection is "does it bring you joy?" NOT the acquisition of the items bringing you joy, but the actual collection itself. The several collectors in my family are clearly in it for the rush of the acquisition and buying of said items. They will f...

I'm glad to hear someone else has had good results from peppermint oil! I'm late to this thread, but when I was living in the UK, I was able to get peppermint oil in enteric coated caplets. That is, the caplets survive the acids in the stomach, and dissolve lower down in the digestive track in your ...

Wow, that's fascinating. It seems like square footage wouldn't be enough. You would need a more complicated formula to qualify a house as a "McMansion." Something like taking the weighted average of square feet and the assessed value, then dividing by the number of people living in the hou...

In my experience in academia, per diem compensation is the norm. As a grad student, it was a great way to pocket a little extra if you're frugal while traveling. Our per diem was tied to the State Department's per diem rates. I thought you might find their schedules useful as a point of reference. T...

Just to throw out some smaller ones not mentioned, I quite like The Bizarro World Debt Elimination Freak Show. Mostly because they are pretty funny. Boston Gal's Open wallet is good, and she also writes for Daily Cents as Jane Dough. Debtspiration has promise (and a wicked name) but they need to get...

Hi! Between the 2 of us, my husband and I have done 8 international moves. Whoa, I just realized how crazy that is, considering we're only 32 now. At any rate, it is exhausting, complicated, yet it can be very rewarding. Since you're already got a container and have mostly packed, you're really thro...
