Thank you all again. Just wanted to follow up. We went with going to a consolidation agency. Details are TBD but outlook looks like a long road but promising.

Apologies for getting defensive. Clearly the underlying problem won't be solved in the near term. But the current plan is to go to a credit counseling service to get some additional advice.. I made an appointment with CCCS this coming week. Thanks all again.

I suspect that a restrictive budget would only push him over the edge again. And it would be wash, rinse, repeat on the credit card debt. hmm that's tricky. Thank you for the tips and considerations. With his credit being so so poor, I'm unfortunately not confident he can get a $35K zero-interest card to cover credit card costs and upcoming surgeries / medical expenses.
