Forum: Personal Finance   Topic: Did I make the wrong choice by buying a Car ?

Fego, I recently posted a similar question here concerning the purchase of a car. I had an "older" car and I convinced myself that I needed a new one. I went ahead and bought it. The purchase gave me the peace of mind. I don't have to worry about car or dealing with mechanics or reliabilit...

I tried to start a conversation about diff. things people can do at year end. I see from Brichon's gentle and insightful comments that it deteriorated into something else. You can have an FSA and HSA. Look into the requirements for both. FSAs are usually offered through one's employer. An HSA you ca...

Brichon, some people may have an employer plan and also perceive 1099 income as a consultant. In this case, one may allocate funds to a solo 401K, in addition to the employee sponsored plan.

If your strategy is to maximize savings, it is NOT a horrible idea.

Alohabear, good point about #2. What I meant to write was to review that and change it during your company's Open Enrollment period. Which is usually mid-November to mid-December.

These are some of the things I do or will be doing: 1 - Review my medical spending and adjust my FSA allocation. 2 - Increase my 401K allocation since it goes up $500 in 2015. 2B - Channel 1099 income to Solo 401K. 3 - Contribute to my children's education savings accounts (529) to lower taxable inc...

JT, perhaps my writing wasn't very clear. I did not mean to say that my 2007 will ultimately cost me 25K. I meant to say that I could have bought the 2012 for 25K with no disruption instead . Adding the navigation, bluetooth and backup camera are all reasonable upgrades and may very well turn out to...

And in all fairness, that's one of the justifications I'm using, if I proceed with the upgrade. The fact that it is OK to give yourself something you want, particularly after you have fulfilled (and surpassed) other finance-related goals. With money, there's always something else. A psychological or...

LMoot, thank you very much for your thought-out response. The ability to have this type of collaboration, I believe, is one the best things about the Internet. I'm still debating and this forum conversation has allowed me to think about it at a less passionate and more logical level. One thing I've ...

Bichon, I’m not looking for justification. I’m looking for ideas and ways to rationalize one decision, one way or another. The way to do that is to ask for opinions of like-minded people that would elicit questions that I will ask myself. When a person asks for help with a decision about something, ...

We are located in the heart of Philly. I need help making a decision or assistance to make sure I’m considering the important things and ignoring the unimportant. After a move in 2011, I lived without a car for almost three years. During that time, we used Zipcars, taxis and public transportation. T...

A little background first: right now, I’m in solid financial health. On target with retirement, 529s, emergency funds, etc, etc. . For the past few months, if not for the past 2 or 3 years, I've had this feeling that makes me think there might be something wrong with me. It's highlighted during the ...

To talk about reaching a goal without gloating...... To celebrate quietly noting that frugality and persistence paid off..... Maybe I'm close to this and maybe I'm not but I wonder the same way I wondered when I was buried in credit card debt and became debt free.....how should one celebrate reachin...

Peachy, let's concentrate on the question of options and not my job transfer. It's kind of complicated which is why I summarized it as I did.

My job transferred me to another company and this new company only enrrolls new staff into the 401K plan at the beginning of each quarter and after six months of joining. Since I did this this week, I won't be able to enroll until Jan 1st 2014. I had contributed 7.5K at my previous job and always li...
