if the costs you are talking about are related to the safety of the home - such as bringing up an item to current code or repairing a major defect (water damage etc), you can roll the extra costs into a mortgage, but only via the FHA. If I were in your shoes I would not have stayed in one company for so long and would have rather joined other companies, held different positions and thereby learnt all the aspects of the trade. Moreover, I would also have a wonderful MBA degree to back my decision and let me grab good positions.

Both distance and regular classes have their own advantages. If you are working and cannot attend classes then you can opt for distance education but always make sure that the study materials provided are good enough and the university is also recognized.
