Spammers

Postby jdroth » Wed Nov 14, 2007 12:05 pm

In order to clean up the blog home page, and in order to reduce the number of questions I need to answer, I moved the VIP code to the same page as the registration form. It looks as if this has increased the amount of spam we're getting. It has been almost nothing for a long time, but now it's a couple a week. That's still not a lot, but it worries me.

PLEASE let one of the mods know if you see spam. If it gets to be too big of a problem, I'm going to have to change the VIP code and then hide it someplace again.

J.D. - Is there a way to add a “report as spam” button to posts?

We'll work on that. In the meantime I will put up a thread in news and announcements that will serve as a report spam. As always, you can continue to PM me, and Ill take care of it

Spam, etc.

I would echo the request for a "report spam" button. It seems sort of public calling posting it in the thread! Although I suppose it keeps us honest. There are times though that sometimes looks totally like spam, and is spam in my mind, but the posters has been around making real posts on other occasions. So, perhaps that's a request for "report objectionable content" rather than just a spam button.

But, I know that's a serious project and serious work by the moderators. Maybe after JD is full-time on the blog?

Also, anyway to hide the Admin thread? Being a neat freak, I hate that there's a forum topic with the big unread checkmark that I can't clear!

Keep up the good work!
Daria

Yes, phpBB has the ability to hide forums for which you aren't "qualified."

But... Even though I'm technically a moderator, I can't get into the mods forum. Is this someone way of telling me something? ;)

I can't figure out how to get that Admin board to work the way I want. I want it to be visible and usable by "moderator and above". But the permissions just aren't working the way I want them to. I know that at the MBN forums, there are a couple invisible forums, but I don't know how they work. Do you, Nickel? If so, are you willing to take a crack at setting the GRS Admin forum up the same way? Let me know and I'll admin you.

Ha ha. I think I figured it out.

The problem was I was trying to make settings at the <i>board</i> level, when I actually wanted to do was make changes at the <i>user</i> level.

Jethro, Nickel, and Jericho -- you should now be able to see and access the administrative forum. Nobody else should see it.

I hope.

Honestly, I have to re-figure things out everytime I make a change at MBN, but I've been able to get things to work, so let me know if you need any help. But yes, I can get into the moderator forum now. Not sure whether or not it's invisible to non-mods.
