Server Problems

Postby morydd » Thu Jun 14, 2007 6:51 am

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

Is anyone else seeing this message when surfing around the GRS forums? Is it a problem at my end? If not it may be something JD needs to take a look at.

I see it from time to time, but quite a bit more than usual this morning.
Read my 'fiscal fitness' financial disclosures here.

Today is the first time I've ever seen it here and now is the first time I've been able to see any content today.

Today I'm seeing it on every other link click. I have to hit back and try again. Usually works the second time.

I forget who J.D. said is hosting this site, I think it's Dreamhost or something, but basically whenever you have shared hosting this kind of thing happens every now and then. There are 12 other sites hosted on the same server as www.getrichslowly.org (you can use the great tool www.myipneighbors.com to find out how many other sites share servers with any site). Sometimes if something goes wrong with one site, or it it's getting a ton of traffic, it can bring the whole server down or at least reduce its access speed. It happens.

Digg is a blessing and a curse:

The extra traffic is nice if it brings residual users, but Dreamhost simply cannot handle big floods.

I've been seeing it off and on for a week or so. More in the last couple days.

JD may have to spring for some additional bandwidth. ;-)

Alas, this may be true. It's not the bandwidth so much as the CPU, I understand. I'll have to ask Trent if moving to a dedicated server helped him at The Simple Dollar. I think it has, but I can't remember...

This also might have had a part to play in it: (towards the bottom of the posting)

Congrats to JD on the great posting!
