I finally broke down and spent the $2 to download a couple of professionally produced icons that I can use for Get Rich Slowly. Big spender, huh? The trouble is, I can't choose between them. The first one -- the dollar sign -- is simple, direct, and understandable. The second -- the piggy bank -- is more in keeping with the theme of the site. Because I'm stuck, I'm asking you folks to vote. Which do you prefer: the dollar sign or the piggy bank?

(Note: the icon will be used for "branding" on other sites, and for the little "favicon" that appears in your browser's address bar. Maybe more in the future...)

Have you looked at the piggy bank at 16x16? I doubt it will look very good as a favicon. I'd go with the dollar sign since it will look better at that scale (even if the piggy bank is more appropriate).

That might be the way to go, Nickel -- to use the dollar sign for very small purposes and the piggy bank for slightly larger formats. I'm not sure how often I'll use either, but it'll be nice to have them in reserve. I'd like to turn the white background transparent. Anyone know how to do this in Photoshop?

In GIMP I usually make something transparent using an alpha channel and select colour. But I'm not exactly a graphics expert.

I like the piggybank better but I agree that on a small scale, the dollar sign will be more esily recognizable.

I think the piggy bank speak much more to what this site is about. The dollar sign is much to generic. I'd try to find a way to make the pig work small, as having multiple "logos" sort of defeats the purpose in my mind. Perhaps do the pig in green with the white dollar sign and lose the circle for the favicon.

I know I'm being picky, but perhaps you can fix the pig. The ears are not supposed to be rounded and the snout is rather large. Also a little more curly tail would be nice. It took me a second to recognize it as a pig, no kidding.

Here's what my representation of a pig might look like....it's crude but I thought it might be a bit more constructive than my initial criticism.

Heh. I like your version better, 144mph. I agree -- the pig looks like something drawn by somebody living in New York City. But it only cost a buck, so I'm not complaining. :)

I didn't have any trouble with the first one, but I do like the second one better as well.

I think the piggybank is a better fit with the site, and might work better as a logo if it were simplified - would it be possible to get rid of the coins at the top of the logo and just have a pig with a dollar sign inside it?

Wow. After the way things have been going, i think you should close this thread and open a new one titled "Choose a New GRS Web Host."

(The blog and forums were down again this morning.)
