Some background info: I have three remaining student loans. All are subsidized federal Stafford loans, and all are serviced through Sallie Mae. My loans have gone into deferment twice, once when I started grad school, and then a second time a few years later when I went back to complete grad school. I did not request a deferment either of these times; I just received notice from Sallie Mae that my loans would be in deferment after I had enrolled in school.
Current situation: I've been accepted into a graduate program that my work sponsors. I'm trying to figure out whether my loans will automatically go into deferment again. While I have no plans to request deferment, it would be a great opportunity for me to knock down a significant amount of the remaining principal.
Some differences between the current program and my previous grad school enrollment:
1) This program is only for a graduate certificate (six graduate-level courses) as opposed to a full graduate degree.
2) The program is set up as a two-year program, so I'll be enrolled in only 3 courses per year, whereas I was enrolled in 5 courses/year previously.
3) My work pays for this program, not me.
I have a feeling the key is whether the 3 courses/year counts as half-time or not. If anyone has any experience with this or information they can share, I'd appreciate it.
