For some ungodly reason I've got a bug up my butt to organize a LinkedIn Live event in Portland this November. For those unfamiliar, LinkedIn is an online networking program allowing you to connect with other people in order to build business. It is, for the most part, virtual. However, more and more cities are conducting "Live" events where members come together IRL to meet and network. Since I much prefer that method I've decided to tackle a Live event for Portland.

My question to you is: What would you want/not want out of an event like that?

My basic idea at this point is to hold he event in a meeting room, probably at a bar so people can get lubed up if they so desire. As an added bonus I'd like to have tables(s) available for people to display information about their companies/products that people can take if interested. Additionally, I thought a raffle would be a good way for people to get their product and services out there and tried by new people. Participants could donate a service or product that is unique to their business and that night, everyone can dump business cards into a bowl in order to try and win them. It would, of course, be by choice whether you wanted to participate.

That's as far as I've gotten. Does that sound good/bad so far and, if you were to attend (and anyone is welcome as long as you're a LI member) what else would you like to see there?

Thanks for your thoughts.

PS: if anyone wants to link up, feel free to contact me.

Mandy, I can't speak for others (obviously), but for myself, the idea is intriguing, but I'm nervous. Why am I nervous? I'm not that great with new social situations. I'm shy. I'm bashful. I feel awkward. Now, as I've written before, I've been on a kick where I do these things anyhow, regardless of how I feel. They end up being not so bad, but still I get stagefright before I do something like this. So, what I'm saying is, I'd like an event where people like me can feel at ease. What does that event look like? Hmmm... Good question.

Getting lubed, as you put it, helps to ease the tension, no question. Another thing that helps in situations like this is to have "facilitators", people who encourage conversation. Last week, for example, I went to a similar event at the KATU studios. They held a blogger meet-up. I was just as nervous going into that, though I knew I'd see some familiar faces (which made things easier). The hosts did a fine job of engaging those of us who showed up first. They asked us questions and got us talking about ourselves. They then introduced us to other bloggers and moved on. This seemed to work well. Also, there were no chairs. This may sound dumb, but it encouraged milling about and mingling.

I know that the above isn't very helpful, but it's what immediately comes to mind. I'll be at your shindig, but I'll be nervous about it. :)

Hey JD, thanks for your thoughts. I'm a pretty outgoing person (something I've forced myself to become) but I still get nervous before events like this. We should meet in advance so you at least know me.

Asking for people to help be facilitators is a great idea. Kind of a welcome wagon. I'll ask for volunteers to help with that.

Also, thanks for the heads up about the email. You were the 3rd person to tell me. you'd think they'd send me a note or something... I use Relenta to manage my email so I didn't think about deleting them off of my webmail server.
