I don't recall (10 years ago) whether I first noticed the mileage decline or the cause, but in my previous car a partially-stuck brake caliper caused a decrease in mileage. Still, tracking the mileage like tracking net worth is easy enough to do (using Quicken) and the potential to catch a problem is worth it to me.
