Is there a thrifty gene?

Postby Dollar Bill » Fri Jun 01, 2007 5:04 pm

From my youth, I think I have been generally pretty cautious or prudent in managing money. I encounter people regularly though that, basically, live from paycheck to paycheck.

It’s interesting to note that people move from being somewhat careless to financially responsible. I’ve honestly never seen anyone go from being a careful money manager to a spendthrift, though I’m sure cases exist.

So what is it in a person’s makeup that results in thriftiness, and why is it more latent in some than in others?

I think a lot of it is how you were raised. I have three sisters-- we're now 24, 24, 20, and 18. My twin and I (the older two) grew up when my family didn't have much money; the younger two grew up when we did have money. My twin and I have the frugal thing going on, not completely, but we have it together pretty well. The younger sibs have a certain sense of entitlement... they think they deserve to have everything they want, because they're used to having everything they want.

The nature vs nurture question. In my wholely unscientific opinion I think it has to do with genes and that's why you don't see savers become spenders. I think you see spenders become savers usually out of necessity.

In my own life, despite growing up in the same environment, I am clearly hardwired differently than my sibling including finances.

oasn: when the board first opened I asked about how to find episodes of an old tv show. I was on a local kids show for 2 seasons when I was 4/5. I wanted to see how much of my personality was already in place at that age, I suspect much of it was.
