I've decided to take a new job which entails a moderate paycut (less than 10%). There is the opportunity that the paycut will be made up for in growth opportunities and bonuses, but it is unlikely. It's a risk, I'm moving from something quite known and secure to a startup where I need to prove myself again and I don't know the industry.

I'll make up for the paycut by reducing the money saved for paying down the house & doing house renovations. I'm not cutting back on living expenses.

On the plus side, I'm saving ~1000/year in commuting costs. And I'm dropping from a 4 hour daily commute to one that is about 1.5 hours a day. And we have a 12 month emergency fund in ready cash. And in the past 12 months we've paid down 25% of the amount remaining on the mortgage.

I think it is the right decision. But I'm really not a natural risk taker.

Tomorrow I give notice. Wish me luck.

My advice is that if it feels like the right decision to you then it probably is. But you have control over the outcome. You will now have to work hard to make it become the right decision. Seize the opportunities it presents. I've worked for two startups. Both were risky but both presented opportunities that I exploited and benefited greatly from.
