I just started a new job. They will match 3% if I invest 6% of my salary, which I am going to do. I would like to retire in 30 years, so I have some time to be aggressive and take some risks. I have two questions,
  1. I have a wide range of Vanguard funds to pick from and I'm wondering which you would suggest. Should I just stick with a target retirement fund or mix and match from the following (listed from conservative to aggressive):
    • Target Retirement Income (VTINX)
    • Target Retirement 2045 (VTIVX)
    • Inflation-Protected Securities Fund Investor Shares (VIPSX)
    • Total Bond Market Index (VBTIX)
    • Wellington Fund (VWELX)
    • Institutional Index Fund (VINIX)
    • Mid-Cap Index Fund (VMCIX)
    • Morgan Growth Fund (VMRGX)
    • Russell 1000 Value Index Fund (VRVIX)
    • Small-Cap Growth Index Fund (VSGIX)
    • International Growth Fund (VWIGX)
    • International Value Fund (VTRIX)
  2. My wife and I both have Roth IRAs through Edward Jones invested in a range of American Funds (no surprise to anyone). The funds have performed alright, but I'm not overly thrilled with them. I'm wondering what your overall opinions are on Edward Jones and if you would suggest I consolidate everything under Vanguard.

The target 2045 seems like a reasonable choice at this point.

As far as the American Funds at EJ, I have no opinion about EJ. They charge a lot in fees but you have probably already paid those so switching now wwill not save you anything. Just don't give them any more money.

American Funds charges an up front fee when you buy (load) or they charge a high management fee. But they are a good fund family otherwise. What you should do really depends on which class of shares you own. Do you know which share class you have?

Our invested American Funds are all class A. So if you were I, you would open Roth IRAs with Vanguard and stop investing through Edward Jones.

Yes I would. I might keep the Class A American Funds funds though. You've already paid the load and the management fees on those after that are usually reasonable.

I would suggest that you start reading widely about investing to educate yourself. You're off to a great start though!
