Just got an email to do a survey about Vanguard's new Professional Management Service offering. Actually, I'm not sure if they are offering yet, or just doing market testing. I haven't researched any more than the survey, which I got $10 for doing. Score!

I personally enjoy managing my investments myself, like a hobby. But at only a .30% fee this might be a very good option for those more inclined to hand their money over to someone else to invest.

Vanguard introduces its Professional Management Service, which provides financial planning, ongoing portfolio management, and access to professional financial advisors. With this service, you’ll get:

Unlimited access to a team of financial advisors who will partner with you on all aspects of this service.
An advisor will contact you whenever the need arises.
You will be able to contact an advisor on your team whenever you need to.
An advisor will send you periodic e-mails to provide updates on your account and share topics of interest (i.e., market commentary).
A financial advisor will partner with you to develop a plan that is tailored to your primary financial goals.
An advisor will evaluate your current situation, including your investments, your spending and saving habits, and your financial obligations.
You will work together to define and plan for your specific investment goals.
Your advisors receive a salary, not commissions.
A professionally managed portfolio that reflects your investment preferences and uses Vanguard’s long-term investment approach. Your portfolio will be:
Highly diversified;
Managed for tax efficiency;
Constructed primarily of low-cost Vanguard mutual funds and exchange-traded funds, or ETFs;
Permitted to hold individual stocks, bonds, and non-Vanguard funds (upon Vanguard review);
Reviewed for rebalancing on a quarterly basis.
A customized web page that will highlight progress toward your goals, communications from your advisory team, and details about your portfolio.
Your web page may be accessed from a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

This service is designed for anyone with $50,000 or more in assets invested in the service.

Any thoughts?

Your paragraph pretty much echoes my thoughts on the matter if the investor needs tax planning, is worried about college for the kids, etc. If the investor is just starting out and hasn't done the basic stuff like set up an emergency fund, started an IRA with index funds, joined their company's 401k up to the maximum match, etc., even that 0.3% is too much additional expense to take on. If you're already paying 0.18% expense ratio on the Total Stock Market Index Fund, this would push you to nearly half a percent in expenses. I have access to higher levels of service than that for free at Vanguard but I've never had cause to use them.
