A business associate calls me up a few weeks ago and says he's able to golf for free at several courses plus cart and asked if I'd like to go sometime. I told him indeed I would but know that I only play whack-a-ball and I'm horrible even at that. Didn't phase him, but I didn't think much of it as I disclosed severe handicaps and figured he wouldn't call me. Out of the blue he calls me today with a tee time opening tomorrow for 18 holes. I reflexively gulp and say yes. I'm thinking $$. I have no clubs, no interest in an expensive hobby even though I love sports where I get to hit things, so I check in on it. Clubs to rent $25, balls $10-15(?). I'll go through a lot. It's an unexpected expense yes, but still I'm a little peeved at myself for my instant panic when 1. I get to have a golf experience with someone who is willing to take his time to show me a few things knowing I know nothing, and 2. the possibility of making a new friend. I can swing the $$, just not very often.

If you can afford it go. Sounds more like quality time to me, which is worth it in the long run.

Right, have some fun. If it makes you feel better consider the expense an investment in future networking and relationship building.

Well worth it. A patient teacher, a great time getting to know each other, some networking, and learned that I hook and he slices. Came into it with a bag of 36 balls, still had half the bag left by the end of 16 holes...too dark to play the last two. An addictive yet peculiarly annoying game.

I tend to do this too, a lot. You can always do it a couple times, and see if there are other interested you have in common, so you don't always need to be golfing to hang out. Like others said, building relationships is good!
