What is the significance of a traditional wedding cake? We are planning a wedding and we wondered if there is any particular meaning behind the traditional tiered wedding cake?

I have no idea what the meaning is or how the practice got started but if that's what your wife wants then it's very significant.

My mother once told me that a wedding cake symbolizes fertility and prosperity. It was a tradition back then for the bride to have the first bite or else, she would be childless and barren. Then there's also a traditional practice for cake cutting. The husband should place his hands over the bride’s, and the bottom layer of the cake should be cut first using a ceremonial knife. Then they both take a bite, to symbolize the new family they will build together and the replacement of the old parent-child union.

Congratulations and good luck on your wedding day Pahosky!

My best guess is that people like cake at parties. :)

We are also wedding planning right now. My advice is to not think about the meaning behind the traditions, since a lot of them kinda suck. Engagement rings? So that if the engaged couple sleeps together and the girl gets pregnant, the guy can't cut and run without leaving behind some way for her to pay for the kid.
