Im considering transferring my roth ira from trowe to vanguard to take advantage of the lower fees. Hopefully i never need to withdrawal my roth deposits but if i ever had to would it be a problem since the account wasnt opened originally with vanguard? Thanks.

I rolled over a small Roth IRA into a larger one years and years ago. The information regarding contributions vs earnings was passed over to Vanguard along with the funds, so I expect no issues should I ever need to withdraw the contributions.

Haven't had to, so can't say for sure, but it seemed easy and comprehensive.

There should be no issues. But, although both TRP and Vanguard will keep records for you, you also need to keep records for yourself to document your contributions. Mistakes happen and it is possible that 30 years or so from now they will not have the documentation you need and you'll need to have your own proof of what you contributed.

It's not something you should lose sleep over but you should definitely start keeping your own records rather than relying on any company to do it for you, even Vanguard.

Most tax return software tracks your Roth IRA basis and keeps it on a carryforward statement that is not reported to the IRS.

Yes, and will you have that in a recoverable form 30 years from now? I have nothing now that will read the media from 10 years ago much less 30. I admit, I don't keep many paper records, but I certainly don't rely on any records in any proprietary software! If I cannot print it with open source software, it's useless to me.

It keeps carrying forward, so you won't need 30 year old software, just last year. Also, I PDF mine, and keep a paper copy. Both methods will hold up for at least a few years.
