I had to laugh when I read your post..

Many years ago when I visited my father in florida I noted that he fell asleep in front of the tv around 9pm and then woke up before 5AM. I can remember him sitting in the kitchen drinking coffee in the morning listening to the news on the radio.

Flash forward 30 plus years and I generally go to bed around 10 or earlier. I wake up at 430 AM and sit by the gas stove, have a cup or two of joe, read and maybe listen to a radio/podcast. I try to exercise (treadmill or walking the pooch) every night. It's a curse but the latest I sleep in ever is 7AM only after a super long day. Funny thing is I feel terrific.

Maybe we can share our afflictions?

I had a lot going on earlier this spring and had to get up really early for work fairly often. Then I had a triathlon that I had to be at by about 5 AM. After spending about 3 months with the alarm going off at 5 and getting up by 5:15 or 5:30 at the latest, I am actually having a hard time sleeping past 6 now even without the alarm! And I don't go to bed any earlier.

I think you probably just need to force yourself to get up early for a while to build a habit.

well you'll have to sleep early. and discipline yourself to wake up during the desired time you want. eventually your body gets used to it and you'll just wake up early even without alarm

Here's something you can try- but it might not be easy.

Set an alarm around an hour before you want to get up. When you are awake expose yourself to bright light. You can do it gradually, but you want to make sure you have your lights on for at least a few minutes.

You can then turn the lights off. You should find that you don't sleep long and have less trouble getting up when the time comes.

The reasoning behind this is that exposure to bright light resets your body clock- it tricks your body into thinking that daylight has arrived and its time to get up.

I'm definitely a night owl. However, AOM posted an article on this subject. Still can't seem to get up early...

Have a baby. I havent slept in past 5:30AM one time in the last 18 months. I envy you and dont really see the problem. Seems like you have plenty of uniterrupted time between 5PM and 9PM.

put your alarm clock farther so you have to get out of bed to turn it off.. so that gives you extra strength and motivation to go on... moving;)

If you really want to take out time 6 hours is enough for a good sleep. You can wake up early in the morning. Take out 1hr for reading purpose an so on for various things.

Good luck dude :)

... I guess melatonin and sunlight has already been touched upon, so I won't go into that.

- The key is to rise ASAP when you wake up, rather than snooze. To make it your conditioned reflex to get up from bed and drink a glass of water (or water with L-glutamine as I do, since i always skip breakfast and do intermittent fasting).

Once you are up and have drunk your water you need to move around somehow; jump around, tense your muscles, or do the dishes or something. But you cannot sit still yet, you must make sure that you're "up" before allowing yourself to sit down or become physically passive.

Do this successfully for a week or more and you will probably not have a hard time waking up early.

I'm a firm believer that if you need something done, you'll find out a way to do it.

I've been waking up at 5am for the past 10 years. I used to hate it, now I dont even think I need an alarm clock to do so.

To start, I would suggest establishing some sort of commitment to get up. Arrange to go jogging with a friend, and don't flake!

I have 2 alarms set each night, one next to my bed, the other is located on my dresser across the room. Not to mention my 2 or 3 digital watches that all seem to go off at the same time. I used to set my alarm on my radio and blast it so it will scare me out of bed, that usually did the trick.

I was once given advice from a mentor of mine, he said "if you do something for 21 days in a row, it will become a habit".

Tomorrow is day 1.
